Greatest show on turf in 2012

Written by: on Wednesday, July 4th, 2012. Follow David Mika on Twitter.

Last season it was Brendan Nosovitch to Kevin Gulyas as one of the greatest combos Pennsylvannia has ever seen. Nosovitch threw for 8,173 yards in his career and most of that has gone to Gulyas who has 3,714 yards receiving.

So, who will be the “Greatest Show On Turf” in 2012?

Here’s my list of the top five candidates in 2012. Who makes your list?

1) Downingtown East

In his first year as a starting quarterback at Downingtown East, Kyle Lauletta to Jay Harris was one of the best pitch-catch combos in the state last season and they may be the top dog this season.

Last year Lauletta passed for 1,971 yards and 23 touchdowns. Harris caught 53 passes for 732 yards and 11 touchdowns.

These players are worth the price of admission. Look for bigger numbers in 2012.

2) Bishop McDevitt

The combo of Alec Warner to Brian Lemelle was deadly in 2011. Their team finished 13-3 and was runner-up in Class 3A state title game last season. Look for this team to make another run to Hershey and a big part of it will be Warner to Lemelle.

Warner had a huge year passing for 3,518 yards and 30 touchdowns and most of his totals went to Lemelle. He caught 93 passes for 1,630 yards and 15 touchdowns.

This pitch-catch combo is looking for the title, “Greatest show on turf and state champions”.

3) Roman Catholic

One of the not so known pitch-catch combos in Eastern Pennsylvania comes from the Philadelphia Catholic league. But this combo of quarterback Michael Keir to Will Fuller is one of the best, not only in Philly but in the state.

Last season Kier passed for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. His main target was Fuller who caught 46 of those passes for 758 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Keep an eye on this tandem in the city of brotherly love.

4) Central Dauphin

Central Dauphin is riding high, coming off a Class 4A state championship in 2011 and two of the big guns are returning, quarterback Brandon Lavia and all-purpose player Zayd Issah.

Issah not only led his team in rushing, but led his team in receiving. He caught 29 passes for 672 yards and 10 touchdowns. Lavia passed for 1,490 yards and 16 touchdowns.

If Central Dauphin is going to repeat as state champions, Lavia and Issah will be a big part of their success.

5) Manheim Township

Manheim Township is coming off a 8-3 record. They are led by quarterback Brennan Scott who threw for 2,480 yards and 29 touchdowns.

His main target, Tyler Karpinski is returning at wide receiver. Karpinski caught 50 passes for 720 yards and five touchdowns.

Look for Scott and Karpinski to terrorize District Three opponents this fall.

Honorable Mention – Cedar Cliff

Coming off a 9-3 record, Cedar Cliff is gearing up for a big year in 2012. But Cedar Cliff had a major set back when TE Adam Breneman went down with a ACL injury in a non-contact drill before a 7-on-7 tournament.

But the combination of QB Andrew Ford and Breneman still makes our list despite the injury. Last season Ford put up nice numbers despite sharing duties with Tyler Orris. He passed for 1,370 yards and 12 touchdowns. Breneman caught 68 passes for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns.

  1. littleguyscoach says:

but IF we did it would be a fluke or plain ole luck.

we will have at least one shot.

  2. Greg Little says:

None of this matters when it comes to Frankford or Washington. Neither team has a QB or a chance in hell to beat the PCL.

  3. littleguyscoach says:

@ GW I’m just sticking for the PPL which gets no respect anywhere! Who said anything about winning anything this thread is about throwing the rock! yeah you beat us in the championship but that was a gift you know it and I know it , and we beat you in the regular season .

    see ya October 5th 🙂

  4. fkd25 says:

@GW, so if you are a coach shouldn’t YOU have better things to do. Whoever said I was a coach? IF I am, your saying I shouldn’t say good things about our team. I could go into a lot of detail about why we haven’t won the league but I rather not talk about YOUR program and the things they have done to win the league. Instead I will worry about our players and getting them better. Thanks for your concern though.

  5. GW Coaching Staff says:

So, littleguyscoach (Dad) shows up touting Tim DiGrigorio (Son) from Frankford HS and the very next post is from a Frankford HS coach touting Tim DiGrigorio. Coincidence, eh? I understand Dads but shouldn’t coaches have more important things to do?

Just so all you NEPA folks know, Frankford hasn’t won their league since 2006 let alone win D12. There’s been alot of talk about Frankford the last 2 years but so far that’s all it is, alot of talk!

  6. Austin Miorelli says:

Whats with all this talk about the Southeast? A great show should be Shendo Valley in Schuylkill County. They have a lot of speed in the receivers with Nick Merva especially, a D1 caliber QB in three year starter Chris Palubinsky, a great coach, and their schedule doesn’t have much speed to play against. They should be able to show off their speed against North Schuylkill, but it will be interesting to see how they far against Tamaqua in week three.

  7. fkd25 says:

@jive, I didn’t say it was true. I said nobody would care. G’town also beat lincoln in the playoffs.

  8. littleguyscoach says:

yeah well they can go check out the schedule this year and let us know what they think when the season’s over!

  9. Dave Shultsa says:

Pancoast to Johnson at Unionville. Everyone will be suprised.

  10. Jiveturkey9 says:

My bad, Fels twice and beat Germantown by 2. Germantown lost to Lincoln. You could write you have 30 D1 prospects, doesn’t make it true.

  11. fkd25 says:

See LGC, no one cares about us in the PUB anyway. I could write we have 10 D1 prospects nobody cares.

@Jive we didn’t play lincoln or olney last year.

  12. WillM says:

Gotta like the returning combo at Conestoga. Joe Viviano threw for 2092 yds and 18 TDs (ran for 6 more) in his first year as a starter, and Andrew DeStefano had 51 catches for 790 yds and 8 TDs.

  13. Jeremy says:

The public league iw worse than District 2 and 4 football, he question should be who could not throw for 5000 yards in the public league

  14. Jiveturkey9 says:

Frankford? When you play against Lincoln, Fels, Olney, etc, a kicker from the Catholic league could throw for 5000 yards. Ha!

  15. Walt02 says:

J.P. McCaskey will have a combo of C.J Gantz in his first year as a starter to LL League Top wideout Diante Playmaker Cherry Who had 65 Rec for 1006 yards last season and 10 TD’S..Last season. And the return of scatback Aaron Swinton will add power to the offense..Swinton is also a shut down corner..

  16. littleguyscoach says:

@fkd25 shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh don’t let the cat out of the bag yet !!!!!!!!!!

  17. fkd25 says:

Agreed lgc, not to mention a 6’3 205lb transfer from NJ and Renz’s little brother Wydell, who may end up being better than Renz on offense, and Frankford should have a very good O.

  18. littleguyscoach says:

Tim DiGiorgio and Renz Compton Frankford, DiGiorgio threw for 2,357 yds and 30 TD’s with Compton being one of 4 receivers who had over 400 yards and at least 4 TD’s with him having 8 .
