Familiar territory

If you looked up the word “program” in the dictionary you might find the name “Southern Columbia Football” under it. The Tigers are one of the most successful programs in Pennsylvania regardless of classifications.

This storied program has produced legends like Jerry Marks, Ricco Rosini, Dan Latorre and Henry Hynoski.

Since the PIAA state playoffs started in 1988 they have won six state championships, including a record five in a row through 2002 – 2006.

The Tigers have been in the finals 12 times since 1988 and maybe these kids haven’t played in a state final, they are well aware of the history.

The last time the Tigers hoisted the PIAA Class A gold trophy was in 2006 when they defeated West Middlesex 56-14.

The Tigers run the Delaware Wing-T offense. “We have been successful running this offense for many years”, said Jim Roth. “Some people look at it as a heavy run offense or one-dimensional. We have adapted and been able to do things with the passing game.”

This year’s team starts with quarterback Brad Fegley who has passed for 1,475 yards on 92 of 147 completions. Going into the Pius X game he had 210 yards rushing and against the Royals he rushed for a season high 107 yards.

Fegley’s favorite target is wide receiver Keith Day.

“Fegley stepped up and he hasn’t run the ball much for us all year”, said Roth. “I don’t know how fast he is but he seemed to run faster than I have ever seen him run.”

The Tigers ground game is led by two 1,000 yard runners. Matt Moore has rushed for 1,168 yards and Tyler Levan has 1,727 yards.

On defense, Moore is the leading tackler followed by Cameron Flore.  Day is a interception hawk to lead the team.

With all this said, here we are again with the Tigers one game away from heading to Hershey to play for another PIAA state championships. Before that happens they will face District 6 champs Penns Manor Friday night.

If I was a betting man I say the Tigers make their 13th trip to Hershey.

unfortunately Cameron Flore will not be playing with his knee injury. I heard it was a possible MCL tear.
