Early on, District 12 has impressive 2010 class

The Philadelphia Catholic and Public Leagues will have some talented athletes in its 2010 recruiting class.  Even though the calendar only reads February, the Philadelphia area already has six athletes that are receiving Division-1 interest.

 

Five of the six are play positions on offense.  Two are quarterbacks; one is a running back; another is a wide receiver; the last is an offensive lineman.

 

The most notable of the offensive talent comes from Cardinal O’Hara.  Corey Brown, a senior-to-be, only played in five games last season due to an injury.  But don’t let the low number of games played fool you at all.  Brown had a per-game average of 169 all-purpose yards.  Before his injury, he was on pace for 1,795 all-purpose yards and 29 touchdowns scored.

 

According to Rivals.com, Brown has 12 offers from Division-1 programs.  Included on the list are Florida, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCLA, and West Virginia.  Expect Brown to easily be the state’s top running back prospect, not to mention one of the more sought-after backs in the country.

 

The two quarterbacks, Northeast’s Malik Stokes and LaSalle’s Drew Loughery, have each surpassed 2,500 passing yards in their careers.

 

Stokes, whose brother Je’Ron is a top wide receiver prospect in the 2009 recruiting class, set a school record for passing yardage in a season for the second consecutive year.  The Public League rarely sees 1,000-yard passers in a season, but Stokes threw for 1,302 yards and 10 touchdowns last year. 

 

Stokes is receiving interest, but no official offers, from eight D-1 schools, including Tennessee, Florida, Florida State, and Penn State, according to Rivals.com.  He’s thrown for 2,558 yards in his career.  No Public League quarterback has ever surpassed 4,000 yards passing in his career.

 

Loughery, like Stokes, hasn’t received any official offers, Rivals.com reported.  The LaSalle field general has only heard from UCONN and Pitt to date.  He’s coming off of a brilliant junior season, leading the Explorers to the District 12 “AAAA” championship game.  He threw for 2,628 yards and 25 touchdowns.

 

One of Loughery’s teammates, wide receiver Sam Feleccia, had a phenomenal junior season.  He caught 51 passes for 971 yards and seven touchdowns.  Feleccia has four D-1 schools interested in him.

 

Another LaSalle prospect who has the potential to go D-1 is Jamal Abdur-Rahman, a multi-purpose running back.  As a sophomore last season, he ran for 1,009 yards, had 449 receiving yards, and scored 22 total touchdowns.  Abdur-Rahman, though, will be listed under the 2011 recruiting class.

 

Rounding out the prospects on the offensive side is St. Joseph’s Prep lineman Seth Betancourt.  He’ll be one of the top offensive linemen in Eastern PA next year.  Betancourt already has four D-1 offers – Duke, Rutgers, Temple, and Virginia, and has interest from four others.

 

The lone District 12 defensive prospect, George Washington’s monstrous defensive tackle Sharif Floyd will be a force to be reckoned with in Public League play.  Floyd was a part of a GW team that registered a shocking upset of LaSalle in the District 12 “AAAA” championship game and advanced to the PIAA playoffs.

 

Floyd already has offers from Maryland and Temple.  Miami (FL), Oklahoma, Penn State, and Pitt are also interested.  Floyd could easily be the best defensive lineman in the city of Philadelphia.  If the list of schools pursuing Floyd isn’t impressive, then maybe his 6’5, 297-pound frame will have you sold.
