By the numbers:  There’s no underclassman on the first page of the chart in the rushing category.  The highest returning runningback is Josh Chowansky of North Schuylkill with 1,733 yards.  There are 8 underclassman runningbacks returning next year.  There are 14 underclassman qb’s returning next year with Cayden Stem of Wilson leading the way with 3,264 yards.  And there are 10 underclassman receivers returning next year with Wilson’s Zach Gillen’s 1,530 yards being the highest total.  There are 32 total players on the chart that can return next year (27 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 1 freshman).  Underclassman players just missing the chart and return next year are Robert Papaleo of Pleasant Valley (951 rushing yards), Dylan Smoyer of Northern Lehigh (976 passing yards).  Kyle McGrath of Palisades (491 receiving yards), Tommy Buskirk of Whitehall (454 yards), and Lucas Heydt of Palmerton (440 yards).

RUNNINGBACKS: 

Even with a shortened season, we had 9 players rush for over 1,000 yards.  All 9 players played at least 8 games with Mason Smeland playing in 10 games and coming out on top.  Smeland rushed for 1,338 yards and scored 22 td’s this season.  The yardage and td’s have him in 5th place all-time at Palisades for a single season.  Ethan Brader holds the yardage record with the 1,732 yards he had in 2018.  John Gruver holds the td record at Palisades with his 27 he totaled in 2008.  For his career, Smeland rushed for 2,725 yards.  With his 2 td’s in the championship game he joins the “40 td” club with 41 career td’s.  He moves into 4th place for career yardage at Palisades.  Trey Gretzinger holds the record with 3,479 yards (2015-18).  Smeland’s 41 td’s puts him in 5th place at Palisades.  Gruver also holds the td record with 55 career td’s (2005-08).  Matt Frauen of Notre Dame was just behind Smeland with 1,313 rushing yards.  That’s the 2nd highest total at Notre Dame behind only Dan Tavani who rushed for 1,572 yards in 2003.  Frauen scored a District leading 24 td’s averaging 3 td’s a game.  The 24 td’s in a season is 4th best at Notre Dame.  Mitch Daniel holds the record with the 27 td’s he scored in 2016.  One behind Daniel with 26 is Tavani (2003) followed by the 25 td’s Gerald Grube scored in 2017.  Frauen finished his career at Notre Dame rushing for 2,468 yards and scored 38 td’s.  Both totals have him in 3rd place all-time at the school.  Tavani holds both the yardage and td records with his 4,460 yards and 61 td’s he scored from 2000-03.  Frank Morici (1988-91) is in 2nd place with 3,146 rushing yards and Daniel is in 2nd place with his 47 td’s he scored from 2013-16.  Tack on Frauen’s 2 years at Belvidere NJ and his career totals have him carrying the ball 472 times for 3,972 yards and 55 total td’s scored.  Josh Chowansky of North Schuylkill rushed for 252 and 266 yards while scoring a total of 5 td’s in their 2 playoff games to finish the season rushing for 1,260 yards and scoring 14 td’s.  The junior will enter his senior season with 1,733 rushing yards and 20 td’s.  Justin Holmes of Northwestern became the 2nd Tiger to rush and pass for 1,000 yards each in a season.  Former teammate Deven Bollinger just completed the same feat last year.  Holmes rushed for 1,070 yards and scored 13 td’s while passing for 1,425 yards and throwing 18 td passes.  Ironically those totals have him on the 3rd page of the chart while his receiving totals from 2019 (31-810-12td’s) have him on the 2nd page.  He’s 190 receiving yards short of being the first player ever in the District to have 1,000 career yards in each of the 3 categories (rushing, passing, and receiving).  He will enter his senior season with 1,151 yards rushing, 1,469 yards passing and 810 yards receiving.  Jayden Williams of Central Catholic rushed for 170 yards in the championship game to vault him to another 1,000 yard rushing season.  Williams ended the season rushing for 1,039 yards and scoring 12 td’s.  He rushed for 1,216 yards and 8 scores last season.  Williams becomes the 4th Viking to have multiple 1,000 yard rushing seasons.  He joins Brendan Nosovitch (2009, 10), Colin McDermott (2010, 11, 12), and Logan Bachman (2017-18).  Conner Goehring of Schuylkill Haven became the 4th Hurricane sophomore to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season.  Kobe Brish rushed for a District sophomore record 2,775 yards in 2017.  Will Casella rushed for 1,255 yards in 2012 and the District’s all-time rusher Zach Barket rushed for 1,205 yards in 2006.  Three other 1,000 yard rushers were reported this season.  Ben Terry of Mahanoy Area totaling 1,185 yards and 21 td’s this season and 1,851 yards and 31 td’s for his career.  Louie Clouser of Panther Valley with 1,086 yards and 12 td’s this season and 1,447 yards and 15 td’s for his career.   And Matt Frame of Northern Lehigh with 1,006 yards and 14 td’s this season.  Frame is a junior and will return next season with career totals of 1,679 rushing yards and 19 td’s scored.  Frame’s teammates Mike Repsher (1,823 yards, 25 td’s) and Joe Abidelli (942 yards, 14 td’s) concluded their careers.  Chase Herb of Tri-Valley ended the season as the top career leader for current players with his 2,903 yards rushing.  With the team not playing for the championship, Herb falls short of a 1,000 yard rushing season.  He rushed for 946 yards in the 6 games Tri-Valley played.  He also falls short of the “3,000 yards” and “40 td” milestones and ends his career rushing for 2,903 yards and scored 37 career td’s.  Brandon Camire of Emmaus follows Herb on the current player career list with his 2,817 yards and 48 td’s.  Camire also played in 6 games this year and missed out on the 3,000-yard milestone.  Camire also fell 3 td’s short of the school record of 51 td’s that Kyle Boney set from 2013-15.  Nick Henry of Northwestern finishes his career rushing for 2,808 yards and scoring 47 td’s.  Henry also caught 57 career passes for 996 yards falling 4 yards short of a career 2,000 yard rusher/1,000 yard receiver.  Rounding out our 2,000-yard career rushers are Nahjee Adams of Easton (2,796 yards – 38 td’s), Isiah Rico of Parkland (2,349 yards – 32 td’s), Matt Rusin of Freedom (2,187 yards – 23 td’s), and Christian Arrington of ES South (2,009 yards – 28 td’s).  Adams garnered enough yards this season before being injured to make the top 5 all-time in career rushing yards and td’s scored at Easton.  He’s 5th in rushing, 83 yards behind Brad Piperata who had 2,879 yards from 2001-03.  Juan Gaddy holds the school record with 5,116 yards from 1989-92.  The 4 former Rovers that are ahead of him for career td’s are Shane Simpson (85 from 2011-14), Juan Gaddy (65 from 1989-92), Ovid Gouldbourne (48 from 2002-04), and Jarred Holly (42 from 2004-07).  Rusin, who was hampered by an injury the 2nd half of the season had a chance at breaking the school’s career rushing record but fell 272 yards short.  Mike Lawrence still holds the career rushing record at Freedom with the 2,459 yards he accumulated from 1981-83.

QUARTERBACKS:

We had 13 QB’s throw for over 1,000 yards this season.  We’ll run the QB’s down by their career yardage totals.  Bryce Herb of Wiliams Valley led the District with 1,875 yards passing this season.  He also finished in 2nd place for td passes with 24.  His career totals of 4,880 yards passing and 66 td passes are both school records.  In his junior year, he set school records of 140 completions, 285 attempts, 2,688 yards, and 37 td passes.  His father, Paul still holds the career records of 326 completions and 657 attempts.  Bryce and Paul each had 2-1,000 yards seasons.  Bryce’s brother Tyler also had a 1,000-yard season when he threw for 1,284 yards as a junior in 2008.   The 3 family members’ career totals add up to 703 completions, 1,457 attempts, 11,605 yards, and 122 td passes.  Bryce missed out on a chance to hit the 5,000-yard milestone but his 4,888 career yards move him into 37th place all-time in the District.  His 66 career td passes have him in 14th place all-time.  Quintin Stephens of Salisbury finished out the year throwing for 1,364 yards and 20 td’s.  For his career, he threw for 3,418 yards and 39 td passes.  He moves ahead of Bill Marushak who threw for 3,236 yards from 1983-86 and into 3rd place all-time at Salisbury.  Kyle McFarland holds the record with his 5,093 yards he threw from 2004-06 and Tevon Weber sits in 2nd with the 4,270 yards he threw from 2013-15.  Stephens is also 3rd best with the career 39 td passes he threw.  He’s behind only Weber’s 53 and McFarland’s 44.  Cayden Stem of Wilson is next in line.  Stem threw for 1,336 yards and 16 td’s in 8 games to up his career totals to 3,264 yards and 39 td passes.  He’ll enter his senior season in 4th place all-time at Wilson in passing yardage and 3rd place all-time in td passes.  Tyler Smith (8,035 yards – 87 td’s from 2006-09) and DJ Lenehan (7,765 yards – 71 td’s from 2003-06) are 1st and 2nd on the Warrior all-time list.  Ryan Dailey is 3rd on the list for passing yards with the 3,551 yards he threw from 2009-12.  Joe Kerbacher of Northampton is up next with his 3,193 career passing yards.  Northampton only played 5 games this season hindering the chance for Kerbacher to break the career passing yardage record.  He ended up 218 yards behind Eric Spadt (3,411 yards – 1993-95) and 318 yards behind record-holder Nick Cook (3,511 yards – 2011-13).  Kerbacher does hold the career td pass record with the 41 he tossed, and he also holds the single-season yardage and td pass records that he set as a junior in 2019.  He falls 48 yards short of a 3,000/1,000 yard career as he had 952 yards rushing for his career.  Matt Rauscher of Central Catholic is up next and the last of our 3,000-yard passers.  Rauscher threw for 966 yards this season and 10 td passes to finish his career with 3,188 yards and 26 td passes.  He was 9 yards short last season of reaches 2,000 yards passing and came up 34 yards short of 1,000 yards in 8 games this season.  He becomes the 7th Viking to have 3,000 yards passing in their career.   Here’s a list of all the Central qb’s that had multiple 1,000 yard passing seasons.  Dan Kendra (3 – 1971,72,73), Andy Baranek 2 (1978-79), Greg Buchman 2 ( 1982,83), Tim Cramsey 3 (1991,92,93), Matt Senneca 2 (1995,96), Josh Hinkle 2 (2002,03), Brendan Nosovitch 3 (2009,10,11), Mason Kholi 2 (2013,14), Ethan Persa 2 (2015-16), and Frank Rauscher 2 (2017,18).  Collin Quintano of Notre Dame threw for 1,850 yards and 18 td passes this season.  His yardage is 2nd best this season in the District.  Quintano threw for over 200 yards in 7 of the 8 games Notre Dame played this season.  The junior will enter his senior season with 2,827 passing yards and 26 td passes.  Josh Leininger of Pine Grove finished the season with a school-record 1,470 yards passing.  Leininger wraps up our qb’s that had 2,500 yards passing in their careers.  He finishes with 2,559 passing yards and 19 td passes.  Jake Hall of North Schuylkill threw for 1,783 yards and a District leading 25 td passes this season.  Hall had 5 games that he threw for over 200 yards including a school-record 370 yards.  He will enter his senior season with 1,875 passing yards and 26 td passes.  Will Fish of ES South threw for 404 yards and 315 yards in 2 of the 4 games South was able to play.  He averaged 204 yards passing and 3.2 td’s a game.  Fish ends his career throwing for 2,406 yards while throwing 33 td passes.  Fourteen QB’s that are on the chart return next year.  Cody Miller of Nativity will return after throwing for over 1,000 yards in each of his sophomore and junior seasons.  Cole Transue of Easton, Jared Richardson of Bethlehem Catholic, and Ty Tremba of Parkland all return next year after throwing for over 1,000 yards in their sophomore seasons but were unable to reach the 1,000-yard mark in their junior seasons due to injury or the number of games they played.  Tremba did throw 8 td’s and no interceptions this season.  Jake Fotta of Emmaus was the leading sophomore qb after throwing for 1,068 yards and 9 td’s.  Those 2 totals are sophomore records at Emmaus along with his 67 completions and 126 attempts.  Brian Frazier held all the old records when he was 61 of 122 for 953 yards and 7 td’s back in 2000.  Conner Schwalm of Minersville was the leading freshman qb when he threw for 1,577 yards and 16 td’s.  He also led the District this season with his 431-yard game.  Conner’s older brother Scott holds the District record with the 492-yard performance he had last year vs Schuylkill Valley.

RECEIVERS:

Chad Parton of Salisbury caught 8 passes for 153 yards and a td in their win over Saucon Valley.  He finishes the season catching 58 passes for 1,052 yards and 12 td’s.  The 58 catches break his old record of 57 that he set last year.  He became the first Falcon to go over 1,000 yards receiving in a season and led the District this year with his 1,052 yards.  That also broke the old school record John Gardus held when he had 944 yards receiving in 2006 as a junior.  Parton now holds all 3 career records at Salisbury with his 127 catches, 2,113 receiving yards, and 23 td grabs.  Shea Morgan of Pine Grove led the District with 64 receptions and was 2nd behind Parton with his 1,019 yards receiving.  Parton and Morgan both caught 12 td passes this season and finished tied for 2nd behind District leader Jesse Engle of Williams Valley who caught 13 td passes.  Parton’s 12 td’s is 1 short of the school record that Mason Donaldson set in 2015 with 13.  Morgan’s 12 td’s ties Larry Zimmerman’s single-season school record that he set in 2011.  And Engle’s 13 td grabs (2nd year in a row) have him finishing in a tie for 2nd place all-time for a single season at Williams Valley.  Cody Miller (2013), Jake Wolfgang (2017), Bo Raho (2019), and Engle (2019) all had 13 td receptions in a season.  The record is still held by Owen Daniel who caught 16 td passes in 2012.  Engle holds the school record for career td catches with 34.  He’s in 3rd place at the school for career catches with 89.  Jason Grow holds the record with his 150 he caught from 1987-00 and Darin Yoder is in 2nd with the 119 grabs he had from 1981-83.  Engle racked up 1,879 receiving yards which is 2nd best at Williams Valley behind Grow’s 2,747 yards.  Christian Sapp of ES South caught 15 passes for 338 yards and 5 td’s in limited playing time in South’s 4 games played this season.  Sapp finishes his career with school records of 105 catches and 1,933 receiving yards.  He also had the 2nd highest total for career td receptions with his 26.  Dan Cason holds the record with 30 (2008-09).  Sapp scored 4 other td’s this season as he had 1 rushing, 1 kick-off return, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 interception td.  For his career, he scored a total of 38 td’s.  Zack Hunsicker of Lehighton caught 49 passes for 765 yards and 5 td’s this season.  Like Sapp, he also now holds the school record for most career receptions (114) and most career receiving yards (1,732).  Yet another record-breaker Gabe Davis of Minersville caught 102 passes for 1,613 yards and 16 td’s (all career school records).  Davis also owns all 3 single-season records with 65 catches for 1,041 yards and 10 td grabs that he set in 2019 as a junior.  Zach Gillen of Wilson will enter his senior season needing 1 catch to join the “100 catch” club.  Gillen caught 38 passes for 501 yards and 5 scores as a junior to up his career totals to 99 catches for 1,530 yards and 18 td’s.  Wilson has 3 former players that have caught 100 passes in their careers.  Adam Thomas (2004-06) holds the record with 129 catches.  Zach Bogoly (2009-12) is 2nd with 113, and Kowan Scott (2008-10) is 3rd with 106 catches.  Wilson also has 3 players with 2,000 career receiving yards.  Scott leads the way with 2,602 yards followed by Thomas with 2,218 yards and Brad Walter (2003-05) with 2,017 yards.  Justin Rodda of Northwestern played in a few games early in the season before being injured again forcing him to miss the rest of the season for the 2nd year in a row.  Rodda did manage to catch 12 passes for 224 yards and 4 td’s.  He finishes his career catching 77 passes for 1,359 yards and 23 td’s.  His td’s tie the school record that Cam Richardson set from 2012-14.  Richardson holds the school records for career receptions and reception yardage with his 97 catches for 1,601 yards.  Rodda is 2nd with his 77 catches just nipping out Trevor Cunningham who caught 76 from 2015-16.  Cunnigham is 2nd in yardage with 1,528 yards and Rodda is in 3rd with 1,359 yards.  Go back almost 30 years and you’ll find the 4th best Tiger for receptions and yardage.  Larry Caamano caught 73 passes for 1,073 yards from 1989-91.  Jaiden Cabrera of Nazareth led the EPC with 41 catches.  He finishes his career catching 98 passes for 1,234 yards and 9 td’s.  Keegan Brennan of Nativity caught a school-record 4 td receptions in their opener vs Pottsville and ended his career catching 42 passes for 1,135 yards and 10 td’s.  Brennan averaged a whopping 27 yards per catch in his career.  Jack McGorry of Central Catholic led the EPC this season with 600 receiving yards.  He wraps up his career catching 93 passes for 1,134 yards and 6 td’s.  Jameel Sanders of Emmaus is our last career 1,000-yard receiver.  His career totals have him with 73 receptions going for 1,069 yards and 10 td’s.  Sanders is the 6th Green Hornet to go over 1,000 yards and has the 5th highest total on the list just ahead of Alex Hersch’s 1,055 yards he had from 2004-06.  Matt Salvaterra holds the career school records for receptions (121) and reception yardage (2,251 yards).  Sanders is 3rd best with his 73 catches, 1 behind Deonte Castro who had 74 from 2016-18.  Bryce Hensley of Blue Mountain tied the school record for td receptions in a season with 9.  Jeremy Miller had 9 td grabs in 1995.  Senior Tanner Walacavage of North Schuylkill caught 29 passes for 792 yards and 11 td’s.  Walacavage only played football his senior year and joins the “one year wonder” club for receivers.  He joins the list in 7th place one spot behind current ES South head coach Matt Walters who leads this list with 18 td catches.  There are 18 players currently on the list and Walacavage leads all of them with 27.3 yards per catch.  Tyler Hays of Parkland leads the list in yardage with 1,100 yards.  Danny O’Hare of Notre Dame has the most catches with the 64 he caught in 2017.  Also on the list is former NCAA All-American Kevin White of Emmaus.  White caught 46 passes for 747 yards and 10 scores in his senior year at Emmaus.  In his 2 years at West Virginia, he caught 144 passes for 1,954 yards and 15 td’s.  He was drafted in the first round (7th pick) by the Chicago Bears but has been hampered by injuries since then and is now with the 49ers.  His brother Kyzir is currently a linebacker for the Los Angels Chargers.  North Schuylkill has the most players on the list with 3 which include Walacavage, Scott Grigas (2017), and Randy Harner (1976).  Bangor, ES South, Nazareth, and Notre Dame each have 2 players on the list.

KICKERS:  After doing some research this is what I have for some of the top kickers in the District.  The highest total I have for PAT’s is Matt Bugbee of Nazareth who kicked 161 PAT’s in his career.  He needed every one of his 4 PAT’s that he kicked in the District final to move ahead of Anthony DaSilva of Bethlehem Catholic.  DaSilva kicked 160 from 2016-18.  The third highest I have is Chris Rodrigues of Wilson who kicked 154 from 2007-09.  Aaron Mill of Northern Lehigh has the 4th highest with the 152 he kicked from 2000-03 and the last player I have kicking at least 150 PAT’S in a career is Jared Colletti of Palisades who kicked 151 from 2014 17.  For the most field goals kicked in a career I have Rodrigues of Wilson and Bugbee of Nazareth tied for the most with 22 each.  Tied for 3rd best I have Sander Sahaydak of Liberty who kicked 19 from 2017-20 and Carson Long of North Schuylkill who also kicked 19 in his career back in the 70’s (1970-72).  Other kickers with impressive stats that I have official totals for are:  Carson Landis, Kyle Landis, and Alex Orlando of Emmaus, Brandon Miller of Northwestern, Jake Bissell, Robert Lawler, Brian Hanton of Parkland, Jonathan Boyer and Brendon Pickel of Easton, Eric Eisenhard, Tim DiGiacomo, and Rustin Seyle of Central Catholic,  Dalton Tucker of Pius X, Mike Georgevic of Schuylkill Haven, Zach Hubler of Tri-Valley, Nate Boyle of Tamaqua, Chris Condly of Jim Thorpe.  How impressive is this list?  Your team would have to score 900 points with every PAT being good by the same kicker just to have 150 PAT’S.  That’s an average of 37 PAT’s a season for 4 years with the same kicker.  For a 3 year kicker your team would have to average 50 PAT’s a season.  A 2 year kicker would have to average 75 PAT’s each year.  The highest 2-year kicker I have is Tim DiGiacomo of Central Catholic with 114 PAT’s from 2010-11.  And that includes another player also kicking 34 PAT’s in his junior year when he kicked 48.  Brian Hanton of Parkland is a close 2nd with 112 PAT’s from 2017-18.
