District 11 Top Returning Player Preview for 2016

DISTRICT PRE-SEASON NOTES:

 

EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE

RUSHING

There are 2 players in each division returning that rushed for over 1,000 yards last year.  QB, Thomas Melchiorre of ESN leads the group with 1,697 yards.  Jamaal Brome of Stroudsburg rushed for 1,646 yards.  Gunner Anglovich of Liberty had 1,450 yards and qb, Travis Stefanik of Nazareth rushed for 1,071.  Brome scored 23 td’s last year while both Melchiorre and Anglovich each scored 21 td’s last year.  Melchiorre’s yardage is a school record (Joe Clouse 1,496 in 2011) and his 21 td’s ties Clouse for the school record.  He also holds the school records for career rushing yardage (2,691) and td’s (32).  Melchiorre also has the school record for most rushing yards in a single game with 329.  Brome ties the school record for junior with his 23 td’s.  Dave Paffenroth had 23 td’s as a junior in 1977 and Gerald Douglas also had 23 as a junior in 2013.

 

PASSING

Five returning quarterbacks threw for at least 1,000 yards last year.  Travis Stefanik of Nazareth leads the group when he threw for 2,346 yards last year.  Jake Cirillo of ESS threw for 1,969 yards.  He’s thrown for over 1,000 yards in each of his first 3 years.  Ethan Persa of Central Catholic threw for 1,874 yards in his first year as a starter.  Dylan Della Valle of PMW threw for 1,150 yards last year as a sophomore and Joe Young of Freedom threw for 1,123 yards.   Stefanick’s yardage and td passes are school records for a junior.  Tom Silvius threw for 2,084 yards in 1987 as a junior and Dan Harding threw 20 td passes in 2010 as a junior.  Della Valle’s 1,150 yards and 10 td passes are school records for a sophomore.  Stefanik led the group with 28 td passes last year, followed by Cirillo with 17.

 

RECEIVING

Julian Liaci of Nazareth leads the pack of returning players with 53 receptions.  Desmond Boykin of Whitehall had 41 catches as a sophomore last year.  Zach Bross of Parkland had 39 catches and Thomas Murphy of Central Catholic had 35 catches.  Liaci led the group in yardage with his 664 yards followed closely by Boykin, who had 660.  Boykin’s catches and yardage are Whitehall records for a sophomore.  Whitehall returns 5 players that had at least 10 receptions last year.

 

COLONIAL LEAGUE

RUSHING

Mike Stasko of Palmerton (1,233 yards) and Mitch Daniel of Notre Dame (1,096 yards) are the only 2 returning players that had 1,000 yards rushing last year.  Job Goodman of Wilson rushed for 831 yards as a sophomore last year.  Stasko scored a school record 21 td’s last year.  Daniel scored 18, followed by his teammate, Jalen Simpson, who scored 11 td’s last year.

 

PASSING

Garrett Perschy of Palmerton is the only returning quarterback to throw for over 1,000 yards last year (1,080).  He also threw for 1,299 yards as a sophomore.  Cameron Clark of Wilson threw for 957 yards as a sophomore.  Perschy also leads the returning qb’s with his 11 td passes that he threw last year.  Andrew Brett of Catasauqua threw 10 td passes in limited action.

 

RECEIVING

Teammates, Corey Raysely and Ryan Greene of Catasaqua lead all returning players with their 51 and 46 receptions respectfully.  Tim Walter of Southern Lehigh caught 38 passes while Daniel caught 32 last year.  Walter led the group with his 761 receiving yards followed by Raysely’s 743.  Daniel had 525 yards, Greene had 519 yards and John Moran of Notre Dame had 509 yards.  Walter leads all active returning players with 1,307 career reception yards.   He is also tied with Joel Santana of Shenandoah Valley for career receptions among active players.  They both have 78 career receptions.  Raysely’s catches, yardage and td catches (7) are all sophomore records at Catasauqua.  Allen Fatzinger held all 3 records that he set in 2001.  Greene broke Paryss Marshall’s junior year school record for catches with his 46.  Marshall had 44 in 2012.  Marshall would go on to catch 76 passes for 1,566 yards and 20 td’s in his senior year.

 

SCHUYLKILL LEAGUE

RUSHING

There are no returning 1,000 yard rushers.  Major Jordan of North Schuylkill leads all returning players with 884 yards.  Darion Jacoby of Pottsville rushed for 848 yards last year as Pottsville joins the Schuylkill League this year.  Richie Zahodnick of North Schuylkill and Preston Gehring of Schuylkill Haven each scored 11 td’s last year.  Jordan scored 10.

 

PASSING

Ethan Kuczynski of Marian Catholic is the lone returning qb to throw for over 1,000 yards last year.  Kuczynski threw for 1,183 yards as he went over 1,000 yards for the second year in a row (1,309 yards in 2014).  Eric Wapinsky of Pottsville threw for 899 yards last year while Mason Freed of Blue Mountain threw for 759 yards.  Kuczynski threw 13 td passes last year, Freed threw 12 and Hunter Kennedy of Panther Valley threw 10 as a sophomore.  Kennedy is the first Panther to throw for at least 10 td’s as a sophomore.  Panther’s all-time passer, Cazzie Kosciolek threw 9 td passes in 1990 as a sophomore.

 

RECEIVING

Official records have Joel Santana of Shenandoah Valley catching 59 passes last year.  The total was lower than first thought but is still a record by 4 catches.  Zahodnick caught 39 passes last year.  Santana had 677 receiving yards last year and Zahodnick had 423 yards.

 

OTHERS:

Dylan Rabuck of Williams Valley returns after rushing for 1,105 last year as a sophomore.  Dawson Schwalm of Tri-Valley had 614 yards rushing last year as a sophomore.  Rabuck scored a total of 9 td’s last year.

 

Ryan McDonald of Pottsville Nativity threw for 751 yards and 7 td’s last year as a sophomore.

 

Jake Wolfgang of Williams Valley leads 5 returning Vikings that had at least 10 receptions last year.  Wolfgang caught 29 pases for 762 yards and 10 td’s last year as a sophomore.  His yardage and td catches are school records for a sophomore.  Fellow classmate Allen Hand caught 26 passes for 592 yards.
