Black Knights Rally for Top Spot in Conference

Lake-Lehman is making comebacks from double-digit deficits a habit. Almost one month to the day, the Knights were trailing Wyoming Area, 26-0, in the first quarter, but thanks to a monster second half  Lake-Lehman scored 35 to propel the Black Knights to a 42-39 victory.

Tonight was more of the same as G.A.R. led 16-0 in the second quarter. Back came the Knights on a Jared Novitski 42-yard connection with Brandon Roberts to close the gap to 16-14. Then a little over two minutes into the fourth session, Bryan Mathers scampered 32-yards to pay dirt as the Knights took a, 20-16, lead that they would not give up.

Lake-Lehman (5-0, 7-0) takes sole control of first place in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2. The Knights’ garnered their first victory over G.A.R. since 2005. The loss drops the Grenadiers to 3-1 in conference play and 6-1 overall. G.A.R. was led in rushing by Darrell Crawford who tallied 114 yards. The Grenadier offense was missing a key piece as they played without their leading rusher, Kurtis Thomas, who sat out the game due to disciplinary reasons.

Next week, Lake-Lehman will try and keep their winning streak going as they welcome Nanticoke. G.A.R. will travel to Wyoming Area on Friday.

No chance of Lehman winning if GAR runningback Kurtis Thomas had played.
