Bishop McDevitt QB Matt Johnson receiving Division-1 interest

Bishop McDevitt quarterback Matt Johnson has lit up the stat sheets week after week after week through his first two seasons as a starting varsity quarterback. Now, he’s on the radars of some Division-1 football programs.

Johnson, a 6’0, 194-pound senior-to-be for the Crusaders, has generated interest, but no offers to date, from seven Division-1 schools, according to his profile on Rivals.com.

Thus far, Boston College, Iowa, LSU, Pitt, Rutgers, Temple and Virginia have shown interest in Johnson, according to Rivals.com. Johnson’s Rivals’ profile also listed UCONN, Maryland and Penn State earlier in the year, but those three schools are not currently listed on his profile.

The attention for Johnson is warranted. Sure, 6’0 is a little on the short side in terms of height for a D-1 quarterback, but Johnson has put up gaudy numbers. He’s thrown for 4,741 yards and 55 touchdowns against 14 interceptions in the last two seasons, and is leader in career passing yardage among District 3 quarterbacks returning for their senior seasons.

Last year, Johnson completed 151-of-229 passes for 2,731 yards and 33 touchdowns against seven interceptions, adding 313 yards and eight scores on the ground. Entering the District 3 “AAAA” championship game against Cumberland Valley, Johnson had thrown 32 touchdown passes and only a trio of picks.

As a sophomore, Johnson threw for 2,010 yards and 22 touchdowns.
