Another Manheim Central QB receives D-1 interest

Manheim Central’s backup quarterback Justin Gorman did an admirable job filling in for Jeremy Knosp when he went down with a shoulder injury during the regular season.

He directed the Barons to the District 3 “AAA” championship game, the Barons’ first title game berth since 2005.

Now, he’s receiving some attention from Division-1 colleges.

Listed as a pro-style quarterback according to Rivals.com, Gorman is the second Baron that is generating D-1 attention in the Class of 2010.  The other is multi-faceted athlete Dakota Royer.

According to Rivals, Gorman is being shown interest from Maryland, Pitt, Rutgers, Temple, Virginia, and Navy.  He has no official offers, according to the site.

Also, Pantherlair.com’s Tony Greco said in a telephone conversation Monday evening that Gorman visited a junior day event held at Duke University in North Carolina.  Greco, though, did not say if Duke was showing interest in the 6’0, 170-pound gunslinger.

When Gorman assumed the reins of Central’s spread-it-out, throw-it-around-the-yard offense, he had tall shoes to fill.  He was replacing a quarterback responsible for 2,216 yards of offense and 20 total touchdowns.

Gorman filled in very well.  He completed 60-of-111 passes for 929 yards and six touchdowns.  He added 69 carries for 280 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.  One of those 69 carries was a back-breaking 99-yard touchdown run in the District 3 quarterfinals against Cocalico.

Gorman also got a chance to showcase his big-play ability at Hersheypark Stadium against West York.  Manheim Central’s first offensive play from scrimmage was a Gorman 64-yard touchdown pass to Dan Trafford.

If Gorman does indeed make a verbal commitment to a D-1 college, he’ll be the third Manheim Central quarterback in the last decade to go D-1, joining Jeff Smoker and Brandon Miller.

Central sent another notable quarterback, Matt Nagy, to the college ranks during the middle 1990s.  Nagy, though, did not attend a Division 1-A program.  Nagy went to 1-AA power Delaware, where he became the owner of some school records formerly owned by Rich Gannon.
