Coaches comments:

How’s your offensive line?

“We have no returning players on the offense line. Bill Frusco is the only guy that has experience coming back on the line. He will play at right guard. Matt McDermott is at center. David Geppert will play the other guard spot and the other two positions are not set yet. Vince Cicalese is battling for playing time.”

Who will be your quarterback?

“We have a guy that moved from Ohio and his name is Kyle Shurmur. He will be a Junior. He has looked pretty good this summer. He is our starting quarterback. The other guy that will see some time at quarterback position is Jimmy Herron. We used him in the wild cat last year.”

How’s your running game look?

“A kid that played some last year was Jordan Meachum. He will be our number one guy this year. Jimmy Herron was our leading rusher. We have a sophomore that have looked good in camp and will get playing time this year for us. One is Jared Walls and he has looked good in camp. The other is Nick Rinella who will get some touches this year.”

How do your receivers look?

“We have Jimmy Herron back and he is our leading receiver from last year. We have three guys that could end up sharing the position or we are waiting for somebody to step out of the crowd. One of the guys is Levi Hardy. He got in a game for us last year. Charles Headen and AJ Grezeszak are the other two kids that are battling for playing time.”

How’s your defensive line?

“The only returning player on the defensive line is Ryan Coonahan at defensive end. Right now the other positions are going to be by committee. Ryan Seiss has looked good. Another kid is Sophomore Isaiah Henrich. He has done a real nice job in some of the scrimmages. Sean Collins, Vince Cicalese and a couple of others are in the mix.”

How do your linebackers look?

“We return Zaire Franklin. He is our only returning starter. Ryan Brady has looked good in camp. Brendan Daly has been getting some reps as well as Aidan Kerrigan. Brennan O’Donnell is in the mix.”

How about your secondary?

“Jimmy Herron played a lot at safety for us last year. Steve Hudak will play at corner and has done a real good job for us in camp. Mick Barrett has been active back there. AJ Grezeszak and Chris Cilliberto will get some reps and there are a couple of other guys looking for playing time in the secondary.”

What is your key this year?

“The whole thing revolves on how quickly the young guys pickup the system and adjust to varsity level play. We had this issue three years ago and the kids responded pretty well. We need kids to step up this year.”

  1. Steve Raczak says:

Malvern Prep vs. La Salle. In La Salle’s 23-17 nonleague win over Malvern Prep Saturday night, junior Kyle Shurmur completed 13 of 27 throws for 276 yards and three scores. Jimmy Herron, a junior handyman for the Explorers, had three catches for 122 yards, including a 74-yard score. He also had a fourth-quarter pick. . . . Involved in nine tackles, including three sacks, senior linebacker Zaire Franklin, back after missing two games because of a broken finger, led La Salle’s defense. Next in line was junior strong safety Ryan Brady (seven tackles, with a first-quarter sack). . . . For the Friars, junior southpaw Alex Hornibrook converted 16 of 35 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. . . . Malvern Prep’s defense was keyed by linebackers Jake Anderson (nine tackles, seven solo) and Trevor Morris (eight, one), and backs Jordan Majors (seven, five) and James Keating (six, two). . . . La Salle’s Matt Raczak boomed a 59-yard, third-quarter punt. . . . The Explorers lead the head-to-head series, three games to two.

Keep your eye on Matt Raczak (La Salle) Kicker / Punter – Winning the field position game – Not skipping a beat after the departure of Ryan Winslow
