Player Name: Nyiem Nevarez, Pleasant Valley

Starting experience: The second game his sophomore season he started at corner. Last year he played both ways. On special teams he did punt and kick returns.

2013 Stats: On offense he caught 17 passes for 392 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed for 25 yards.

On defense he had 48 solo tackles, 52 total tackles and four interceptions, all of which went back for touchdowns.

On special teams he averaged 29.7 yards per kickoff return and 10.6 yards per punt return. He had a touchdown on both a kickoff and punt return last year.

Coaches Q&A with Dave Pacchioni:

Q. What are his strengths on defense?

A. His biggest asset is his breaking ability. What I mean is, if a guy beats him off the line he has the speed to make up the ground and make the play.

His other asset is his natural ability to go to the ball. Last year he had four picks and all four picks led to touchdowns.

He has amazing speed and has good technique tackling.

He has great technique in all our zone coverage’s and that’s where he will play most of the time. But if our opponent has a great receiver, we want to make sure that will rotate him to that position so he can cover their best receiver.

 

 

Q. What are his strengths at wide receiver?

A. He has good speed and it’s not just the straightforward speed. It’s the speed after the catch. When he catches the ball watch out, he has great moves.

He has great hands and runs crisp routes and he cuts on a dime.

He’s usually our inside slot receiver. But at times depending on the situation we may put him out there as an outside receiver.

He’s the total package at receiver. He has good footwork, breaking ability, is a good blocker and the hands that go with it.

This year we’re going to get him the ball a lot of different ways.

 

 

Q. How’s he as a kick and punt returner?

A. He’s going to do both again this year. When you get the ball to your best players hands, he can do incredible things with it.

He has a tremendous ability to read blocks and knows when to cut off those blocks and has the ability to make big plays.

 

 

Q. Final thoughts on Nyiem?

A. He has great character and leadership qualities. He’s a kid that not only is working hard on football, but also working hard to get better in the classroom.

I would take my shirt off my back for the kid and I know he would too. If I am in a street fight in a back alley, I know I want him behind me.
