When teams get together for the start of preseason practices under the intense heat and humidity of the ever-relenting August sun, it’s obvious that none of them aim to be marching into Week 9 with a sub .500 overall record. But, as is the case just purely based on the math involved, not every squad can be so fortunate to see the finish line of the regular season right there upcoming in plain sight with a 0 or 1 next to their name in the loss column.

And while that may be true, most specifically as it relates to both the Garden Spot Spartans and Warwick Warriors when describing their 2026 campaigns with each coming into their Friday night tussle with both having more losses than wins respectively, there is a little more than what meets the eye at first glance for both of these long-time county foes.

For the visitors in this one, the blue and grey hailing from nearby New Holland, while Garden Spot appears to at best be a long shot in making the upcoming District 3-5A tournament in two weeks’ time considering the Spartans’ 3-5 record coming into this one that put them inside the 18^th hole which will get trimmed down to a 12-team field, this is a 3-win squad that appears to offer something much deeper than just that triumvirate of triumphs alone.

For starters, while it is accurate to say that Garden Spot came into this penultimate regular season game while only winners once in their last four outings, that stretch of play did include some notable factoids regardless.

Among them, a thrilling late-game win against arguably the biggest long-time nemesis for any high school program that calls Lancaster County it’s home, Manheim Central, before unfortunately finding themselves on the exact opposite end of the emotional spectrum the very next week when Cocalico was able to convert a two-point conversion in the waning stages to ultimately snatch up a 22-21 victory that understandably put a noticeable dent into any sort of tangible Spartans’ playoff push. From there, while it is equally true to state that the Spartans spotted Solanco 54 points in their game last Friday evening, it’s equally critical to highlight that Garden Spot themselves tallied 28 points against one the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s best teams this season, the current high-water mark surrendered by any opponent found within the Mules’ seven wins thus far. Not only that, but Garden Spot claimed a staggering 29 first downs, including finishing just shy of authoring a cool 500 yards worth of total offense in last week’s defeat.

As far as their counterparts on this night, while their wins were in even shorter supply by comparison, they too were a bit deceptive when purely assessing the win/loss ledger all things considered.

Admittedly, it might be somewhat difficult to come to that conclusion for a group spotting a 1-7 overall record, sure, but a deeper dive will do it some justice.

In fact, of those seven teams which have finished the contest with more points scored than Warwick in 2026, all of them possess winning records. And frankly, these are exactly teams found meddling around the .500 mark either – a feat which becomes abundantly clear when you consider the combined 44-12 overall records amongst their victors with each one either firmly having essentially locked up a postseason bid without fail, or finding themselves right near the cutline of making the district playoffs. And when have put it together from start to finish, namely aided in no small part to the abilities found in the duo of quarterback Colin McGaw and wideout Vince Yacoviello, the latter of whom leads all the L-L League in receiving yards, it can be fairly impressive considering their 31-13 win secured on the road up at Fleetwood two weeks ago.

So yes, while the records between these two might have indicated one thing coming in, these certainly appeared to be two squads that had much more to offer than just their shared records alone. And when you put them on the field against one another, the possibility existed for sparks to fly.  Sure enough, there would be more than enough pyrotechnics to be found throughout. The majority of which happened to be ignited by those on hosting duties.

But it didn’t start out that way.

After first holding Warwick to a prompt three-and-out on the Warriors’ initial possession of the ball game, highlighted by a sack tabulated by way of Garden Spot junior linebacker Jordan Cruz, the Spartans wasted little time in making good on their second offensive series themselves.

In that regard, after seeing junior running back Jeremiah Zimmerman come out of the chute and rattle off a 31-yard run on the very first play before then ripping off another key scamper on a 3^rd & 5 play which then moved the ball down to the Warwick 15, that was all the further the Spartans needed to travel prior to scoring.

For the score itself, the guests found paydirt on a nice 15-yard slant pattern between the quarterback and receiver duo of Isaiah Lapp and Gavin Compton respectively, as the junior duo did their part in making it a 7-0 Spartans’ advantage with 5:25 remaining in the first.

Yet unlike their first time with the football, Warwick was wide awake – and plenty lethal – from there on out.

Case in point, after beginning to author a steady and methodical march down the field, thanks in no small part to the powerful running offered by senior tailback Brady Winters, Warwick found themselves in prime position to formally sign their rebuttal to Garden Spot’s prior score.

And sign they would once junior lefty triggerman Colin McGaw was able to connect with his trusty target found in Vinny Yacoviello, as the pair was able to strike gold in the form of an 18-yard pitch and catch touchdown to knot the score at a 7-7 stalemate with all 10 seconds left in the first frame.

The foremost problem for Garden Spot to contend with for the duration of the opening half? Warwick’s offense only continued to show and demonstrate upmost proficiency in working against them.

With that in mind, on their next drive following their most recent scoring escapades, the Warriors’ offense continued to remain in top gear.

Here, after first receiving a second lease on life courtesy of a Garden Spot roughing the passer penalty which allowed Warwick to prolong the series, the hosts found themselves at the entrance of the red zone following a long reception hauled in by Yacoviello when coupled alongside a Winters’ run of 22 yards which followed suit to move the ball down to the Spartans’ 20-yard line.

All told, what would crystalize into an 89-yard scoring drive was officially signed, sealed, and delivered once McGaw was able to find Yacoviello yet again, this time from 25 yards out, as the pair’s second touchdown connection of the opening half pushed the Warwick lead out to a 14-7 count with 6:55 left before the intermission following Michael Pluta’s second successful PAT of the evening.

But Garden Spot was up for this challenge.

In fact, they too would take to the skies when it came to answering their hosts right back as a busted coverage defensively led to a wide open Seth Musselman streaking all by his lonesome down the Spartans’ sideline, as the Garden Spot senior receiver was able to haul in a practice-like 60-yard touchdown reception on a 3^rd & 16 play which knotted things back up at 14-apeice a little more than two minutes later.

However, 4:25 was more than enough time for Warwick to demonstrate their offensive aptitude.

Sure enough, the Warriors were able to execute what turned out to be a four-minute drive quite masterfully as a staggering third touchdown thrown by McGaw to Yacoviello with all of 27 seconds left in the opening half, this of the 5-yard variety, helped send the home side into the locker room with the wind of a 20-14 lead at their backs with just one final half of football left to played at Grosh Field this season.

Simply put, Warwick’s offense was the primary catalyst as to why the hosts were able to enjoy the spoils of a half dozen-point lead come the halftime recess on Friday night. Now, provided that their defense rise up to the challenge and complement the other side of the ball in harmony, an eventual Warwick win seemed all but a certain provided that the same themes from the first half carry over into the second.

And as if to be right on cue, Garden Spot’s opening offensive possession of the third quarter was met with an abrupt end once Warwick junior linebacker Owen Bowlby was able to snare an interception, giving the ball back to his offensive mates with all of 13 yards left to navigate following his return following the theft.

Yet even while the Warriors would be able to trudge no further along both literally and figuratively following the Bowlby pick, a 30-yard field goal booted home by way one of the many seniors playing in their final home contest, Michael Pluta, made it a two-possession Warwick lead at 23-14 with 7:32 left to play in the third period — the same exact score that remained intact once the sun rose on the final dozen minutes on Friday night in Lititz.

But did we mention that Warwick’s defense had come to play in the second half?

If not, Michael Pluta had no issues whatsoever with helping to prove that point as his interception, one of four hauled in by the Warriors’ defensive troops inside the final 24 minutes against Garden Spot, gave Warwick prime real estate yet again with the home team setting up shop at the Spartans’ 12-yard line following his takeaway.

Even there, despite going three yards backwards, there seemed to be no deterrent whatsoever when it came to disrupting the rhythm and chemistry found between Colin McGaw and Vinny Yacoviello on this night, as their fourth touchdown shared between them – this from 15-yards out with Yacoviello juking and jiving his way through would-be Garden Spot tacklers en route to the endzone — made it a 29-14 Warwick lead with all of 7:18 left to be played.

Suffice to say, if the Spartans had any desires of staying within the fight with a little over half of the final act left to be played, it became paramount that they find success and tally a score immediately.

The assignment would prove itself to be accepted.

Here, after navigating what would be 70 yards over the course of nearly three minutes on the nose, a 1-yard touchdown run by way of senior lineman Chase Hoover, lining up in the backfield on the short yardage play, helped to trim the deficit back down to a one-score margin following Zach Martin’s successful PAT, making it a 29-21 contest with 4:20 remaining.

Yet it seemed only fitting that Warwick’s defense be the ones to slam the door shut with force.

For those honors, the proverbial nail was hammered home courtesy of Warwick’s Logan Munoz as the senior defensive back was able to read his keys perfectly before coming away with a 49-yard pick 6 for his troubles, a score which eventually put this verdict out of reach at 36-21 with all of 95 seconds remaining.

And for the final capper, it would be an underclassman’s turn as Ky Szobscan was able to nab an interception of his own inside the final minute which then allowed Warwick to set up in the best offensive set found in football, the victory formation, as Warwick was able to score their second win of the season, their first and only one enjoyed at the home confines in 2026, by fending off a game Garden Spot crew, 36-21.

NEXT UP: From here, Warwick will look to ride the clear momentum and good showing found in this game into their final tilt of the campaign next week at rival Manheim Central as the Warriors look forward towards 2027 on what would be a two-game winning streak to close the book on this season.

For Garden Spot, this tough defeat at Warwick almost certainly locks the Spartans out of a playoff spot in the 5A field once that bracket becomes cemented following next week’s regular season finales across District 3. And while that understandably would be a far shorter end point than what they had hoped for, the fact of the matter is that there is a lot to look forward to in New Holland looking forward. In fact, most of the skill position players who did a majority of the damage on this night are due back into the fold come 2027. And with a good portion of the top teams in L-L Section Three slated to see key members graduate from their respective programs come this upcoming spring, there’s reason for optimism that this Garden Spot crew, one that has already shown the makings of being a thorn in everyone’s collective side as it is, will be some kind of headache for the teams that find themselves opposite them to contend with next fall.

In terms of their last times out respectively, you could not have possibly found a starker contrast in an emotional high and low than the lived experiences from both of these squads in their Week 6 contests just seven days ago.

For the Governor Mifflin Mustangs, there truly was no higher high achieved by the crew from Shillington so far in 2026 than what transpired last weekend – and what a statement it was authored by the maroon and gold last Friday night.

There, even despite coming into the night with an 0-fer on their resume in terms of the number of wins yet accrued, the Mustangs sure had a funny way of showing that they were a team that had been absent of entering the win column on the year considering 71-14 verdict they put forth upon the Lebanon Cedars, a most triumphant way of cracking the proverbial goose egg for this proud program hailing from just outside the Reading city limits to capture win numero uno on the year.

On the other hand, for the Elizabethtown Bears, their tax paid was at an entirely different end of the emotional spectrum comparatively speaking.

For the blue and white from the western side of Lancaster County, this 2026 campaign to-date has been one of the better seasons seen in recent history.

Aside from entering with what was a four-game winning streak tallied by E-town prior to their much-ballyhooed game against Exeter last Friday, not the least of which included an equally demonstrative win at the hands of Lebanon within that stretch, 85-6, Prince Wratto, aptly named for the level of royalty and finesse he has demonstrated so far in toting the rock for the Bears, has been a revelation of sorts as the junior tailback has tallied a baker’s dozen in terms of touchdowns scored, all while possessing an equally sultry average at just north of 11 yards per attempt thru for the first six weeks of 2026.

For that reason, when scanning the interwebs last week and noticing that E-town found themselves with ownership of a decisive 27-17 advantage at the end of three quarters against that aforementioned perennial power known as the Exeter Eagles, it seemed that this was truly the dawn of a new day in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two race as the Bears appeared to be well on their way towards planting their flag right there near the top of the heap amongst their divisional brethren.

Well, that was until that hopeful narrative did an abrupt about-face inside the game’s final act.

Cruelly, certainly from E-town’s perspective no doubt, the Eagles not only vaulted their way back into the lead over the course of the final dozen minutes last Friday, crystalized into the form of a 13-0 fourth quarter shutout against those ardent Bears, but Exeter more importantly traversed back home to Berks County quite happy for their troubles considering their gut-check prize that came accompanied inside of what was by all accounts a truly wild and thrilling 30-27 comeback effort — on E-town’s home premises no less.

Needless to say, for these two squads, the question at hand could not have been laid out more plainly and succinctly when they met up with one another on Mifflin’s home turf just seven days later.

In short, would Governor Mifflin be able to replicate just some of that same magic and sheer prowess exerted in that emphatic 50+-point win, or would E-town be able to right the ship and not fall victim to the proverbial danger of letting one loss quickly balloon into two, especially with the Bears not only still sitting right there squarely in the picture of not just the L-L Section Two title chase heading down the final furlong just one game back entering this Friday night, but while also sitting directly right outside the cutline of making the District 3-5A playoffs as the #13 seed in a 12-team bracket, albeit with four games still left to play.

And while it might have taken them a bit to truly hit top gear, rest assured that the Bears emerged from their dens and clearly made amends for the events of last Friday evening.

However, while the result may have ultimately gone in their favor, the initial goings on didn’t exactly lay out a perfect flightpath for E-town to try and navigate.

In fact, the Bears’ first possession of the game ended with a thud. Well, a Gunner Gebhart sack tallied for Governor Mifflin to be more specific, before the Mustangs’ starting offensive unit took to the field and proceeded to author a marvelous first possession of their own.

All told, it would be a journey that was 60 yards in length exerted over the course of six minutes’ worth of clock time. A trek that was helped in no small part to a pair of third down conversions, plus one of the fourth down variety to boot, as Mifflin trigger man Jack Miller was able to connect with Lucas Kreider for the 20-yard pitch and catch on said 4th & 10 to successfully move the sticks as the pair helped usher the Mustangs’ attack down inside the E-town 10.

From there, the one who had done the bulk of the heavy lifting all throughout this initial march, Patrick Steuer, put the finishing touches on this early Mifflin haymaker as the powerful senior running back bullied his way across the chalk for the 2-yard touchdown run, making it a 7-0 lead in favor of the home team with all of 2:54 left outstanding in a rapidly moving opening frame.

Rapidly moving: A phrase that could also best describe Prince Wratto when he carries the football under his right arm on most every occasion.

And never more was that on full display for all to witness than with his 66-yard TD run on E-town’s second offensive possession, complete with feats of escaping, eluding, dodging, spinning, cutting, (insert any verb of choice really), as Wratto’s highlight reel of a house call that probably could have been blown dead on a few occasions had the refs decided to determine forward progress, knotted things up at 7-7 with then 1:06 left to tick off the first quarter clock.

Also, just in the interest of proper housekeeping, but it should also be noted that Wratto’s TD run only came as a result of his kickoff return for a touchdown being wiped off the board on the following Governor Mifflin’s first score.

In short, the Mustangs’ first series on Friday was a thing of beauty. Between the consistent body blows that came in the form of Steuer runs between the tackles which paired quite nicely alongside successful conversion attempts to prolong the drive, the secret ingredient amid the concoction was that it also kept the ball away from what had already proven itself to be it a highly lethal and potent E-town offense. Then, as if to be right on cue, Mifflin began to embark on a carbon copy of a second series as well.

And while this drive would also net points at its conclusion, albeit just in field goal form, it nonetheless allowed the hosts to recapture the lead once more as a 32-yard field goal knocked through the pipes by way of Gavin Belz awarded the lead back to Mifflin, 10-7, with 6:35 left in the opening half.

That was the good news. The negative you may ask? E-town’s offense trotted right back out.

Two plays. That’s all it took for the Bears to find their way back into the endzone as fate would have it.

In this version, a 40-yard strike across the middle of the field thrown by way of Elizabethtown junior QB Kolton Eckinger into the waiting the mitts of a fellow underclassman, freshman Rudy Brisbane, put the white-clad guests back in front following the pair’s touchdown connection at 13-10 with 5:57 left before the break.

It would prove itself to be a lead which they would never relinquish.

So, with the E-town defense promptly doing its job in rising up and thwarting the ensuing Mustangs’ offensive drive to nothing more than a punt back to them, the 3:14 remaining figured to be more than enough time for the Bears to inflict even further damage.

They would.

For those honors, in perhaps the least surprising manner possible, Prince Wratto would once again be the one serving in the role as calculator for the E-town contingent as another six-point addition to his night’s body of work in the form of a 4-yard touchdown run from the exquisitely talented Wratto, who flashes remarkable contact-balance on most every tote, put the wraps on what became a 21-10 cushion following a Wratto 2-point conversion run on top of it all with nary 51 ticks left in an opening half following this devastating late half score.

But a more devastating blow, perhaps the one singular event all night long which arguably flipped the game’s eventual verdict, would come via the Bears’ defensive unit.

There, with Governor Mifflin right on the doorstep of counterpunching their opposition’s recent score with one of their own inside the final seconds of the second stanza with the ball sitting inside the E-town 5-yard line, a back-breaking interception snared by E-town junior defensive back Ayden Martin not only stymied the Mustangs from drawing closer back into the fight, but it almost seemed that all the positive air inside the stadium itself went kaput given how the hosts had ended this drive with nothing to show for it in terms of points, but no left to regroup either seeing as how Martin’s theft came with four seconds remaining before the intermission.

Indeed, whether perhaps exclusively linked to the aforementioned interception or not, the game’s second half was entirely bathed in Elizabethtown blue and white.

First up, the Bears’ starting defense holding Governor Mifflin to nothing more than a three-and-out coming out of the locker room to usher in the second half. Then, after setting up shop at the Mustangs’ 48-yard line following the exchange in possession via the subsequent punt, the Bears’ quickly found themselves sitting at the Mifflin 12-yard line courtesy of a pair of long Kolton Eckinger QB runs to get things in motion.

But there was a not-so-underlying theme that encompassed this contest. That being Prince Wratto finding his way into the endzone – perhaps in the most unorthodox and miraculous of ways.

Fittingly, for as exciting as his first score of the night was, his third was just as, if not perhaps more impressive somehow as Wratto’s 12-yard touchdown run here was less of a run and more of a whirling dervish through what felt like nearly the entirety of the Governor Mifflin defense, as his third TD of the ballgame upped the lead out to a 28-10 difference with 8:57 left in the third following Max Barron’s PAT.

But the beat of the E-town drum just kept pounding.

Remember Ayden Martin and his thievery right before the break which seemed to turn the game on a dime? Well, for his encore, Martin high-pointed an errant Mustangs’ pass on the ensuing possession, giving the rock back to the Bears’ offense, albeit nestled deep within the shadows of their own goalposts.

No matter.

Not when Prince Wratto can hit the hole, make one cut, and immediately speed his way home for a 92-yard touchdown gallop, which is precisely what transpired following Martin’s second interception as Wratto’s fourth TD of the night made it a 35-10 E-town lead with not even half the third quarter having yet expired.

However, even for all the offensive fireworks that seemed to be spouting off, no further points would be added up on the scoreboard for either team over the course of the final half dozen minutes of the third quarter. Partly due in part to the sharing of interceptions back and forth between the squads with Lucas Kreider coming away with one to stall an E-town drive, only to then see Gannon Shank promptly retaliate back in kind with one of his own to just as quickly halt a Governor Mifflin drive.

Yet even with the absence of points throughout the penultimate quarter’s waning stages, that didn’t mean that the scoreboard operator could check out early.

With that in mind, Kolton Eckinger called his own number and reaped the rewards in the form of a 6-yard touchdown run which put the final piece of punctuation on what was a 35-0 rally to answer what was once upon a time a 10-7 Governor Mifflin lead all the way back inside the second quarter.

Even still, with the eventual outcome of this one nothing more than forgone conclusion by this juncture, Governor Mifflin continued to keep swinging – a feat and intangible not lost on a squad that features a bevy of underclassmen at many of the game’s most critical of positions.

Case in point, the quarterback and wide receiver tandem which just so happened to tally the final points of the game altogether as Jack Miller’s 7-yard swing pass resulted in a touchdown reception credited to Lucas Kreider as the Mifflin sophomore duo made it a 42-17 contest, the same numbers which remained emblazoned up on the scoreboard once the final 5:18 bled off the clock the rest of the way until the final gun as E-town made the most of their trip across Lancaster County and up into Berks following this decisive 25-point triumph at the hands of Governor Mifflin.

And for a team that has a lot to look forward to, not just for the remainder of this 2026 campaign, but into the near future as well, this could very well be a key victory to look back on and circle amid this E-town rise back up to prominence.

Sure, perhaps this game largely went according to script if you looked at it on paper coming in. But when you have your collective heart ripped out the way in which it almost surely had to have been following that loss to Exeter last week, not having that defeat spiral into something greater isn’t anything to simply pass off. To be sure, if purely judging these last two weeks inside a vacuum, the Elizabethtown Bears appear to have a whole lot of character. Well, that, and talent doesn’t hurt either of course. Fortunately for them, they appear to have both in spades.

The contest was called with 1:35 remaining in the third quarter following an extensive injury delay. At that point, Steel-High held a 21-5 advantage in first downs and had outgained Newport 321-85, including a 213 to minus-2 advantage on the ground.

Steel-High struck first when Jaishawn George scored on a three-yard run with 8:56 remaining in the opening quarter. Yosiah Franklin added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Newport responded later in the quarter. Quarterback Logan Bates connected with Jameson Cummins for an 11-yard touchdown pass with three minutes remaining. The extra point failed, leaving the Buffaloes trailing 7-6.

From there, Steel-High took control.

Silas Hernandez opened the second quarter with a four-yard touchdown run, and Franklin’s extra point extended the Rollers’ advantage to 14-6.

George found the end zone again with 5:39 remaining in the half, scoring on a seven-yard run. The extra point was blocked, but Steel-High carried a 20-6 advantage into halftime.

The Rollers added another touchdown in the third quarter when Jayden Cleckner scored from one yard out with five minutes remaining. Franklin converted the extra point to make it 27-6.

The game later entered an extensive injury delay and was ultimately called with 1:35 remaining in the third quarter, making 27-6 the final score.

Steel-High’s ground game controlled the contest, producing 213 yards on 30 attempts. Cleckner led the way with 81 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Kamar Iberedem added 49 yards on six attempts, while George rushed eight times for 45 yards and two touchdowns.

Ni’Shaun Ward-McMullen contributed 25 yards on three carries, while Hernandez finished with 17 yards and a touchdown on three attempts.

Quarterback Jayce Jones completed 11 of 18 passes for 108 yards with one interception. Kalvin Pillier led the Rollers’ receivers with three catches for 41 yards. Iberedem caught five passes for 38 yards, and Hernandez added three receptions for 29 yards.

Newport had difficulty establishing its running game against Steel-High’s defense. Landon Cigic led the Buffaloes with 18 yards on three carries, while the team finished with minus-2 rushing yards.

Bates completed 9 of 12 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. Johnny Mayeresky and Myles Devlin each finished with 33 receiving yards. Mayeresky caught three passes, while Devlin had two receptions. Cummins caught two passes for nine yards, including Newport’s only touchdown.

Both defenses recorded an interception. Miles Devlin picked off a pass for Newport, while Iberedem recorded Steel-High’s interception.

The Rollers controlled possession with their rushing attack and limited Newport to five first downs and 85 total yards. Steel-High scored on the ground four times, including two touchdowns from George, to secure the 27-6 victory in a game shortened by the injury delay.
