Q & A with Danville head football coach James Keiser

We sat down with Keiser and talked to him about his team for the 2012 season.

How is your camp going this summer?

It’s going good and we are working with the incoming freshmen. The kids are working hard in practice and we are getting ready for our first scrimmage.

Who do you have coming back on offense?

We have Senior OT Mason Fausnaught (6-1, 260) and a kid that played a little for us last year, Junior OG Chris Humbert (5-9, 190). Our center is a junior and his name is Matt Shipe (5-9, 201). Our right guard might be Junior Ian Ficca (5-9, 190) and our right tackle is Junior Blake Remensnyder (6-3, 220).

Our quarterback is doing well this summer. He really has impressed us in 7-on-7. He was a backup the last two years. His name is Weston Baylor (5-11, 182). We are expecting really good things out of him.

We have Junior Sam Dressler (5-7, 180) back at fullback. We also return our halfback, Junior Isaiah Croll (5-10, 180). We are blessed with depth there and we are going to use Senior Cale Rice (5-6, 172). He ran a 4.5 up in the District four combine. We have another fullback sophomore Tom Brouse (5-7, 175) who does a good job for us.

We are really blessed at receiver. We have returning Senior Bret Berg (5-11, 182) who played receiver last year and will be at tight end this year. He is our number one guy. The other wide out is a kid that played a lot last year for us, Junior Zack Kozick (6-0, 180).

We have seven returning starters on offense.

Who do you have coming back on defense?

We have nobody coming back on the defensive line. We are replacing the whole line. Our key player on the line is sophomore Jacob Sheridan. The other positions are up for battle. But we have a young man who is probably going to play nose guard for us. His name is Junior Marcus Wilt. At the defensive tackle position we are going to rotate in with several kids. Guys like So. Gunnar Feldmann, Sr. Mason Fausnaught, Jr. Blake Remensnyder and Jr. Matt Shipe.

We are returning two linebackers. Our middle linebacker is Jr. Eric Haney. We also return Isiah Croll. We also have Sophomore Tommy Brouse playing inside linebacker. He played some last year as a frosh.

I think our secondary is the best we have ever had here. We have three returning starters from last year. You have Sr. Cale Rice at one corner and Jr. Zack Kozick at the other corner spot. Sr. Bret Berg is back at safety spot. We have a young man who has looked good in 7-on-7 this summer. He is Jr. Charles Rivera.

We have four returning on defense.

Who do you have coming back on special teams?

Our kick returner is Cale Rice. Punt returner will be Bret Berg. Our kickers will be Shayne Riley and Colton Riley. We will rotate our punters with Shayne Riley and Bret Berg.

League

I think our league is going to be the toughest since I have been here. Mifflinburg is strong again this year. Shikellamy got a new coach and they should be better. Selinsgrove is going to be much improved. Shamokin is going to be tough. It’s going to be competitive this year.

To have a successful season you have to?

We got to be able to hang on the ball. We can’t afford turnovers or injuries. We don’t have a lot of depth.
