Coaches Q&A with Michael Matta:

Q. What are his strengths at defensive end?

A. He’s very aggressive. He’s very intelligent and really knows what we’re asking and what we’re trying to do. He also understands what the opponent is trying to do.

He’s a national-level, youth rugby player for his age group. He’s able to see the field a little bit more than most defensive lineman. He can see what the offense is trying to do by the way they are lined up. He’s really good at figuring things out and reacting.

When he was a sophomore he was more of a pass rusher and last year he developed into a very good run stopper. He’s really well rounded and has discipline.

Q. He’s going to play offensive guard this year. What are your thoughts?

A. Our guards have to be athletic, because we pull a lot. They not only have to be physical, but they have to have good feet and move. He’s that guy.

He’s such a good athlete and can move well.
