West Catholic QB Anthony Reid generating D-1 interest

Written by: Josh Funk on Friday, June 18th, 2010

The 2010 edition of the West Catholic Burrs is absolutely brimming over with talent – and one of those players is its newest field general.

Quarterback Anthony Reid, who directed Philadelphia Northeast Catholic’s offense last season as a junior before the school ceased operations, has received interest, but no offers, from four Division-1 programs – Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse and Temple, according to Scout.com.

Reid put up solid numbers in the final football season for the Falcons, completing 77-of-163 passes for 1,098 yards and nine touchdowns and added six rushing touchdowns on 68 quarterback keepers, according to statistics from tedsilary.com. Reid threw for 100+ yards in a game on five separate occasions – with notable performances that bookended his 11th grade year.

In the Falcons’ season opener against Chestnut Hill Academy, Reid threw for 186 yards and had two total touchdowns. In the season finale against Frankford, Reid completed 19-of-28 passes for a season-best 212 yards. He had a hand in three of Northeast Catholic’s four touchdowns against the Pioneers – throwing for two and running for another.

After a rough 1-3 start to its final season, North Catholic rallied to win five of its final seven games, including the Frankford game, 28-22. The Falcons averaged 17.4 points per game.

Reid inherits the reins of a West Catholic team that averaged nearly 32 points per game and finished as the second most productive scoring team in WC history (477 points).

Reid will replace outgoing Burrs’ field general Jarred Evans, who totaled over 2,200 yards of total offense (1,889 passing) and 24 total touchdowns (16 passing) in 2009.

West Catholic, which has posted a 37-6 record over the last three years, finished 12-3 overall last season, falling to Lancaster Catholic in the PIAA “AA” semifinals, 23-21.
