Tyler Smith verbally commits to Maryland

Tyler Smith, quarterback for Wilson Area High School in Easton, PA, announced that he made a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland last evening, according to an e-mail sent from his mother to PA Football Digest magazine owner Brian Hollister.

Smith was ranked among ESPN’s Top 150 high school football prospects in the 2010 recruiting class. Smith earned the ESPN ranking by throwing for 2,952 yards (the second-highest yardage total in the state last season) and 35 touchdowns.

For his career, Smith has thrown for 4,870 yards (83^rd all time) and 55 touchdowns, just nine shy of a three-way tie for 12^th place in state history in that category, according to the Pennsylvania Football News Resource Guide.

In addition to Maryland, Smith received offers from Iowa, Pitt, Syracuse, Akron, and UCONN. Penn State, Rutgers, Virginia, and Illinois showed interest, but did not extend an official offer, according to Rivals.com.

Smith’s verbal, though it is non-binding, means that the Terps have landed a Pennsylvania quarterback in its second straight recruiting class. Maryland landed Seneca Valley quarterback CJ Brown, a dual-threat athlete who threw for over 3,500 yards, in its ’09 recruiting class.

Maryland also recruited, and landed, former Conestoga Valley field general Jordan Steffy earlier in this decade.
