Quarterbacks to watch in 2014

Pennsylvania has a rich tradition at the quarterback position for many reasons? Why? What other state has produced as many “well known” signal callers as Pennsylvania? They have produced legends like Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Dan Marino, Johnny Unitas, Jim Kelly and George Blanda and many more.

Many colleges always check out our athletes to see who may be the next great quarterback out of Pennsylvania.

Here’s an early look at some of the top quarterbacks in Eastern Pennsylvania and leading the way is, Kyle Shurmur of LaSalle College HS. The 6-foot-4, 210 pound senior-to-be, passed for over 2,400 yards and 25 touchdowns  in his first season at LaSalle. 247sports.com has him ranked 16th in Pennsylvania.

The list consists of players from Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 12 and Independent teams. Athletes are arranged in alphabetical order by first name.

   Tyler Shay from Mid Valley was “one of the best QB’s at the camp ” said Coach Curry. You got to give this kid some notice, he went down there and ripped it, and had some recruiters on a leash all day.

   Yes very good, well mannered kid. Comes from a good, athletic family with 2 other little brothers who are equally impressive in their own right. He throws the deep ball fine already but could improve with touch on his crossing & intermediate routes. Drill work, foot work, the small things is what he needs to fine tune. The talent & the arm is there, as well as the ability to make plays with his legs. He has some film available of soph. yr on HUDL. He was 6’2 in 10th grade with room to grow. As you stated the dad played D1 & a little pro & he plays for Ortega & a great staff so i’m sure he should progress yr by yr.

   @ NothinButSports24/7 … I heard nothing but good things about the kid. His dad was a stud at Temple and then Balt. Colts before an injury ended his career.

   Keep an eye on Jr. QB Jordan Young from Coatesville. Last yr he had to take over the Red Raider Reigns from Emmett Hunt as a soph. even tho it was his 1st yr playing QB after playing WR/RB in prior yrs. He has a cannon arm that needs some fundamental work & reps that I’m sure he’s receiving from Coach Ortega. Anxious to see how he progresses after a yr in the weight room & drill work. Kid is a gamer & with some more seasoning is going to open a lot of eyes.

   What about the kid from Mid Valley, he only really started 2 games last year but really flashed. Tyler Shay had 2 strikes against him last year, 1. new head coach/ new system 2. A senior in front of him. When he played he really had a calmness about him and really showed some signs of a great qb.

   Wow, six (6) are from District 12, three (3) from District 1, and the 4 non-PIAA QBs are from also from Southeast PA. Of the 29 on the list, 13 are from SE PA. That makes sense given that’s where the population is.

   District 3 has six (6). District 11 has four (4). District 4 has three(3). District 2 has just one (1).
