2012 Big School Coach of the Year: Matt Ortega, Coatesville

bscoty12eastHead coach Matt Ortega guided his team to a 13-3 record and was runner up in the PIAA 4A title game.

Ortega is in his fourth year as head football coach at Coatesville. He was the head coach at York High from 2004 to 2008, Defensive Coordinator at Harrisburg in 2003, Defensive Coordinator at JP McCaskey from 1998 to 2002 and running back coach at Saint Francis University in 1997.

The Red Raiders had one of the most explosive offense this season. They scored 630 points an average 39.3 points per game. During the playoffs they averaged 45.3 points per game.

How special was this season for you? “It was great for our players, school, and community to win a District 1 championship and play in a state championship game for first time in school history,” said Ortega.

What moment stood out for you this year? ” Winning 11 games in a row, after starting the season 2-2.”
