Starting experience: He started his sophomore year as an offensive lineman and played some defense. Last year he started on both sides of the ball.

Honors: 1^st Team SOL American Conference All-League at OL

 

Coaches Q&A with Dan Chang:

Q. What are his strengths as an offensive lineman?

A. He has great feet for his size and great technique. He’s very intelligent and our leader on the line.

When we ask him to run block he does an excellent job. He’s a good pass blocker and has a long reach to keep the defenders away. He has good side-to-side movement.

 

Q. What are his strengths on defense?

A. He’s a big force on defense. He does a great job filling the gaps. Most teams have to double-team him.

He has the combination of size and speed. His biggest asset is stopping the run. He gets off the blocks well and moves quickly.

 

Q. What’s he doing in the offseason?

A. He is probably one of the hardest workers I have ever met. He always puts in extra time. He works on his strength and footwork.

He’s in the weight room and out in the field working on agility every day. He’s always calling up our assistant coach to open up the weight room for him and a few players on weekends so he can work on things. He’s very dedicated.

 

Q. How’s his leadership?

A. He’s a leader by example. The kids see the type of work ethic he puts in and what it takes to play division one football. They see you can’t do the minimum, you have to do the extra things to get better.

 

Q. Talk about his commitment to Virginia?

A. I remember the first time he went down there to visit. He didn’t know much about the campus. I talked to him a little bit about there. My brother went there and I worked there for a couple of years. I told him it’s a great place academically and the football program has done some nice things there.

After his first visit, he was in awe. He really enjoyed the coaching staff and the players down there. His parents really liked the campus and the academics.

He came to the realization that that was were he wanted to be and he pulled the trigger on it.

 

Q. Final thoughts on Ryan?

A. He’s a kid you want to build your program around. You like to have that type of kid in your program all the time. He’s hard working and a great role model.

He’s very coachable and a great young man.
