PIAA Football Co-ops: by Dave Carty -- Posted by Dave on Friday, March 31st 2006
PIAA Football Co-ops
When a high school does not field a team in a sport, it may ask a neighboring school to include its student athletes on their team. If the school with the team agrees to take the other schools athletes, the schools sign a cooperative agreement (co-op). The sending school's enrollment is then added to the sponsoring school's for classification.
Many co-ops exist in Pennsylvania, in both boys and girls sports. It allows the athletes a chance to participate when their own district does not, or can not, offer it. Not every school can afford to build or maintain football fields or swimming pools. Some schools do not have enough student athletes to field teams in every sport. Having co-ops helps to open more doors for participation.
Every boys' sport listed on the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Schools' Classifications list has at least 2 co-ops. Here is a list of those boys' sports, the number of participating schools, and the number of co-ops.
The PIAA list shows the name of the sponsoring school, the school's enrollment, it's classification, whether it has been upgraded to a higher class, and the reason for the upgrade (Voluntary or Co-op). It does not list the co-op school(s) or the additional enrollment amount.
I contacted every school that has a football co-op to find out who they are partnered with for the 2006 season. Here's what I found.

Small School Coach of the Year -- Posted by Dave on Thursday, December 29 2005 Head Coach Jim Roth, Southern Columbia HS
Jim Roth has coached for 22 years with a record of 262-44-2. Roth’s team started the 2005 season 3-2 and when the season was on the line the Tigers rolled off 10 straight wins en route to their fourth consecutive PIAA Class A state title.
The Tigers have won 15 straight district championships and their team has made the trip to the championship game eight years in a row and 10 of the last 11 years, winning five state titles. With their win this year the Tigers tie Berwick’s record of four consecutive state titles and Mount Carmel with five state titles.
In 2006 players like Henry Hynoski and Josh Marks will be coming back. The Tigers will be gunning for a record five consecutive state titles.
Big School Player of the Year -- Posted by Dave on Wednesday, December 28 2005 Quarterback Pat Devlin, Dowingtown East HS
Devlin is one of the most sought after high school quarterback recruits in the nation. The 6 foot 4, 200-pound quarterback already has the size and arm strength for the next level. He led the Cougars to an 11-2 record, before losing in the PIAA Class AAAA state quarterfinals to North Penn.
This year Devlin set a state record for career passing yards by throwing for 8,162 yards. He finished the season with 2,750 yards passing and 27 touchdowns. Devlin will continue his education with a scholarship to the University of Miami.
Big School Coach of the Year -- Posted by Dave on Tuesday, December 27 2005
Head Coach - Kevin Keating, Pottsville Area HS
In just three seasons Keating turned a 2-8 team into back to back District 11 Class AAA champions. The Tide reached the state finals for the first time in their school history.
It was not a easy road to Hershey. The Tide had victories over Wyoming Area and Whitehall in the District 2/11 Subregionial games. Then they had to go on the road and face two powerhouse teams, Strath Haven and Manheim Central. Those two programs have won gold at Hershey. The Tide would lose against Franklin Regional 23-13 in the State Finals.
What a magical season for the Tide as they finished second in the state and created memories the fans will likely never forget.
