Best HS Football Game ever

Written by: on Wednesday, August 17th, 2011. Follow David Mika on Twitter.

I was thinking over the past 15 years, I have seen hundreds of HS Football games. Which game would you say is the best HS Football game you ever saw?

One game that comes to my mind recently was in 2006, Bethlehem Liberty defeated Pennsbury in four-overtimes 45-38. That was one of the greatest games that people still talk about.

Another of my favorite games was the 2003 3A State Final game in a snow storm. Manheim Central won in double overtime over Pine-Richland 39-38 to win their first state championship in football.

What is the best game that you ever saw?

    District 2 = football pride
with many respected “SMASH MOUTH” football programs
there are so many amazing game’s to recall….
however as LAKELAND CHIEFS fan there are many for the CHIEFS that come to mind….many would say
from the year 2000 LAKELAND was the annoying monkey
on the respected DUNMORE BUCKS back who dismantled teams except the CHIEFS for 11 straight games LAKELAND held off rival DUNMORE in season and DISTRICT 2″AA” CHAMPIONSHIPS. season sweeps on DUNMORE doesn’t come easy. in recent years the Bucks have turned the tide ..The Chiefs WILL BE BACK !!
    OTHERS WOULD DEF SAY…..
    2010 “at” UNDEFEATED RIVERSIDE VIKINGS
in week 9 with everyone healthy for the vikings the CHIEFS were down 20…and came back to BEAT the VIKINGS 21-20 winning that game”AA” LAKELAND won the LFC title and
‘A”RIVERSIDE went into the P.I.A.A PLAYOFFS HAMMERING teams and reached the class “A” STATE TITLE game
losing a VERY CLOSE game against CLARTON THE VIKES were up 24points late in the game ..but bowed to a very talented Clarton squad ….
but one game that stands out to me is the year 1980 Lakeland the owner’s of 7 suburban league championships moved to the “BIG 11” with “SOME” schools saying we couldn’t compete with the big dogs well the CHIEFS settled this with POWERHOUSE VALLEY VIEW COUGARS in the
    BIG 11 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
    LAKELAND 43
    VALLEY VIEW 8
    enough said !!
Lakeland’s championship tradition started with the much respected Jerry Wasilchak who lead the CHIEFS to many championships coach “WAZ”
retired in 1984 but stayed on the sidelines for many years to lend his much respected ideas
    SUBURBAN CHAMPIONS
    1971-1972-1975-1976-1977-1978-1979-

    BIG 11 CHAMPS
    1980-1981-1982-1987

    LACKAWANNA FOOTBALL CONFERENCE CHAMPS
    2000-2001-2002-2003-2004-2005-2006-2010

    DISTRICT 2 “AA” CHAMPS
    2000-2002-2003-2004-2006

DISTRICT 2 is loaded with PRIDE to mention
    a few…..BERWICK …….
ABINGTON HEIGHTS – DUNMORE – VALLEY VIEW –
OLD FORGE – RIVERSIDE – LACKAWANNA TRAIL –
    DELAWARE VALLEY- DALLAS
and one team on the rise is WESTERN WAYNE
with going many seasons without any wins
last year winning a few and losing close games
the WILDCATS have shown BIG IMPROVEMENTS !!!
good luck wildcats and new coach !
just remember “YOU GET OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN”
    HARD WORK- PRIDE – =CHAMPIONS
    GO CHIEFS !!!!

  3. P-D.P. says:

Mine go back a little more than 15 years but not to far past.

Second best game I saw. 1991 Eastern Conference Class 1 Final Berwick (10-2) at North Pocono (11-0). 2 heavyweights pounding it out. Berwick leads 21-14 with 20 seconds left. Keith Olsommer catches a 10 yard touchdown pass from B.J. Gallis. After learning that Montoursville had won the right to go to the state tournament (as they only took 4 teams that year), NP head coach Nick Donato says F-IT, we’re going for the win. With Berwick pinching the ends, Fullback Ryan McGee takes the ball right up the middle for the 2 point conversion and a 22-21 victory that gave NP a 12-0 season.

BEST game I saw. 1988 District 11 AAAA Championship Pocono Mountain (11-0) at Easton (10-1). Pocono Mountain from the little Centennial League and Easton from the big bad East Penn Conference. Can it be that the Centennial League can go into Cottingham Stadium in Easton and walk away with a District Championship 2 years in a row? Easton took Lehighton very lightly the year before and paid dearly for it. There was no way they were going to let it happen again. Or would they? Easton stuffed the stat box full like it was no tomorrow, while Pocono Mountain was barely staying afloat. Easton lead 17-14 (the only time all season PM trailed) with 6 minutes to go and was marching down to put the final nail in the coffin. But Eric Dial stepped in front of a Marlon Worthy pass and returned it 35 yards to set the Cardinals up. They drive the ball to the 10 where Placekicker and Soccer Star Dave Smith hit a 27 yard field goal with 4 minutes to go to tie the game at 17. The feeling around the Press Box was the game would end in a tie and both would be declared champions. What we didn’t know was that this was the first year of the OVERTIME TIE-BREAKER. Pocono Mountain won the toss and deferred. With the ball placed on the 10 yard line, Easton came out and gained 5 yards on first down but 2 incompleted passes brought up 4th down. Worthy attempted a 22 yard field goal that he pushed to the right. Smith then calmly came out and nailed a 27 yard field goal that as Bob Gehris called on the Twin-County Cable TV broadcast “He kicked that thing down to Fisher Field”. Final Score PM 20 Easton 17. Total Offensive Stats PM 187 total yards Easton 379 total yards.

  4. BucsFan says:

Interboro (7th seed) wins at Hazelton (2nd seed)in double overtime, 2002 AAAA first round game. Large home crowd, only about 100 Bucs fans there. Interboro is a huge underdog, not to mention much smaller in size than Hazelton. Nice people of Hazelton asking me, “Where are you from?” Fast little bowling ball for Hazelton (Josh Heck?) gains about 350 yards rushing, 250 in first half. Fumbles ball in 2nd OT to seal Interboro win. Will never forget it.

  6. Harry says:

The Eastern Conference game (90 or 91) between Shamokin and Berwick at Shamokin. Really tough, physical game. Both teams were stacked. Shamokin’s defense was great that year and Berwick had Powlus. So many hard hits and over 13,000 there to watch!

  7. SCH says:

1997 or 1998 CB WEST vs Central Dauphin. Pettine vs. Chaump.
Armstrong, Potter et al force overtime to win…at Hershey Park for the Eastern State Final.

  8. A.TRENTALANGE says:

I GOTTA ADD, WHEN MY SO PLAYED 05-06 WITH LOWER MORELAND (D1) THEY PLAYED AN UNDEFEATED PENNINGTON,NJ TEAM FOR THERE ONLY 2ND PLAYOFF SPOT( WE PLAYED AND LOST TO LANSDALE CATH. A REAL CLOSE GAME )IN THERE SCHOOL’S HISTORY ,IT WENT 3 OVERTIMES, WE WON AND PLAYED A HELL OF A GAME, I KNOW WE’RE NOT A BIG TIME PROGRAM BUT WE HAD ONE HECK OF A TEAM THAT YR.THANKS !

  9. Austin Miorelli says:

The greatest I’ve ever seen was when the 2-6 Tamaqua Blue Raiders upset the 6-2 Minersville Battlin’ Miners. The game was pushed back to Monday Night Football and was also sent into overtime 21-21. Minersville scored first, 28-21. Tamaqua failed to score on 4th & Goal but had it called back on pass interference and scored on the next play. Tamaqua fumbled the extra point and the kicker just hurled the ball into the endzone where it was caught for the 2-point conversion, 29-28.

  10. Mark says:

Last year’s Eastern final with LaSalle and North Penn was the best I have ever seen. Two heavyweights standing toe to to killing each other for four quarters. They both left everything on the field that day. I left that game thinking that there is now way LaSalle can recover from that type of game and be ready to play a State title game one week later. It was just too brutally physical.

  11. Rich says:

Erie Cathedral Prep was loaded with big time recruits when they ended CB West’s state record winning streak, 41-35 in overtime.
I left convinced I’d never see a better game.

  12. Tej says:

2001: Pius X/Sharpsville. Sharpsville goes up 9-7 on a FG that bounces off the cross bar TWICE before falling over. Then Sharpsville fumbles late in the 4th quarter trying to protect a lead – ball gets kicked and re-fumbled down the sideline for 40 yards. Sharpsville punts out of their own endzone with less than 20 seconds to go. Pius fair catches and wins the game on a last second free kick. Absolute slobber-knocker all afternoon. Was the first weekend after 9/11 also. Teams were #1/#2 in the state during that week as well.

  13. CPB says:

Prep vs CB West in 1999 and 2000 for AAAA state championships. What added to drama was both teams ranked in top ten in the nation those years

  14. Henry says:

1998- ACC vs Manheim Central great game, smoker sacked and fumbled on I believe the 20 yard line going in ACC wins 27-21.

1993- ACC vs Berwick classic game up in scranton.

2006- Liberty vs Pennsbury a game people will talk about for a long time.

1999- Beca vs CB West Beca hung with them and the LB gregorek may have been the best player on the field for both teams

  15. ben says:

one game i seen was 2009 district playoff game aa between panthervalley and northschuylkill at pottsville i think they went to three overtimes
with ns winning ns then went on to make a great come backagainst n lehigh which was a classic battle.

  16. Frank LaBar says:

I’d say the AA State Championship game between Wilmington and West Catholic. WC was huge favorites and at halftime it looked like the game would end up being a laugher. The Greyhounds (Wilmington) roared back and ended up taking the much more talented Burrs to OT. It ends up that both teams scored but WC went for the win with a 2 pt conversion. QB, Curtis Drake gets hit shy of the goal line and the Greyhounds side went bananas. What a great game!

  17. Bog Larka says:

    Two games both from 2002.

Wilson West Lawn (led by Chad Henne) against Central Dauphin. CD was supposed to be the beast from the East that season, they beat WWL 38-35 in probably the best D-3 final game I ever saw. Henne was absolutely magnificent and it assured me he’d eventually make an NFL roster. Scrambling, running, and rifling the ball all over the field.

CD vs Parkland; Austin Scott was held in check for most of the first half & game. Parkland led the game 28-0 at one point. It was looking like it could be a mercy rule game. CD ends up scoring 21 straight points and recovers a controversial onside kick. Ends up moving the ball a little bit but stalls out and loses. I’ve never seen J. Birney Crum’s one sided field have that many fans in it. Literally endzone to endzone filled with people. Quite crazy.

  18. John says:

2005 AAAA playoffs – Neshaminy, a powerful preseason favorite beaten in the final seconds single handedly by the arm and legs of Pat Devlin of Dowingtown East

  19. Buddy says:

    Mark:

yea, I remember that game. Lota hype leading up to it. There are alot of great games in the suburban one league every year. You don’t even have to wait for the playoffs. Souderton/Pennridge last year. Now there’s a rivalry that goes back many years.

  20. Mark says:

The Council Rock South vs Neshaminy game last year. Two undefeated teams, i think they were both 6-0. It was 6-0 Neshaminy at the end of the half. It was back and fourth the whole game until the 4th quarter when Souths defense stepped up and stopped Neshaminy from scoring again. Then South took the lead late in the fourth and held Neshaminy from going in to score again. South came up on top 28-21. Both teams were ranked in the top ten in the state at the time.

  21. AJ says:

1994 AAAA state title – McKeesport vs. Downingtown. Came down a goalline stand between two future Penn State teammates, Aaron Harris from D-Town and Brandon Short from McKeesport. Four straight handoffs to Harris and four straight stuffs by Short to win the title for McKeesport. Sounded like a shotgun going off at Mansion Park every time their helmets collided.

  22. nick7del says:

    @Buddy
That’s why I said barelyyyyyyy made it out of single digits and your still bringing up the next week too like why? And by the way, North Penn was ranked 11th in the nation that year so yea, Ridley was a pretty big underdog.

  23. Buddy says:

    @nick-7:

Last word on this subject, because it really doesn’t warrent anymore. youtube videos are blocked at my computer station. Therefore , I did not see it. So my quess on the score was diggin’ up memory from over 2 years ago. Pretty close quess I think. You shouldn’t assume anything.

  24. Buddy says:

    @nick7:

I have probably forgot more then you will ever know about that game & high school football in general. I know it pains you that they lost the next game, but a season is more then just one game. By-the-way, 10 is a double digit number, not single.

  25. nick7del says:

    @Buddy
Ok well you obviously don’t know much about this cause you didn’t know the score when I gave the video and said they barely made it out of single digits and for whatever reason you keep bringing up Lasalle like Lasalle has absolutely nothing to do with that game.

  26. Buddy says:

    @ nick7del:

Thank you. Still don’t know how Ridley lost the following week to LaSalle. I think they left it all on the field with NP. I do believe Ridley stopped the ineveitable state champ that year. NP might have been looking past them ( big mistake). I think NP would have been the state champ if they had gotten by Ridley. Oh well — hindsight

  27. nick7del says:

    @Buddy
    the score was 19-10

  28. Buddy says:

    @ nik7del:

That was a good game. NP lost by 8 points ( 17-9), so maybe that’s why it’s not mentioned. Just wasn’t close enough to qualify. However, I see you love to exagerate!! NP was not favored by 45 points!!!! They were not HEAVILY favored either. Indeed they were favored, but only slightly. Ridley simply out-played them in that game with speed & physically beat them. Maybe Ridley’s greatest game ever. I really don’t know how Ridley lost the following week ( Eastern finals), if they would have played in that game like they did against NP, they would not have lost.

  29. nick7del says:

Why has no one mentioned Ridley over North Penn in the ’09 District 1 Championship Game!? Ridley was a huge underdog, being predicted to lose by 45 points, yet the Knights barley made it out of single digits. Best, loudest, most hype game ever.

    @ Dale:
Three good choices. I seen all three, one of them live ( #2). But it’s hard to beat the 2000 state championship between CB West & Erie cathedral prep. That played out like it was scripted for “Friday Night Lights”.

  31. Tornado Pride says:

1998 ACC 18 MCA 15 – MCA driving for win when pass gets deflected at the line and intercepted. Both go on to win state championships in AA and AAA.
2000 AAAA state championship – ECP vs. CBW.
2000 PIAA AA playoffs – MCA over Lakeland 12-0. MCA up 6-0 comes up with a goal line stand on 4th and inches with under 2 mins left. 3 plays later Jon Veach breaks a 95 yd TD to seal the win.
2003 AAA state championship – Manheim Central over Pine Richland
2003 MCA 34 SCA 28 in 2OT battle of defending A and AA state champions.
2008 AA state championship – Wilmington over West Catholic

  34. Dale Chalk says:

Bethel park vs Liberty (2008 AAAA Finals)
(A little underestimated but a very exciting game to be apart of.. Anthony Gonzales helping Liberty grab the victory in overtime but Bethel Park was just a great “team”.. when they were ‘on’.. they were something special to watch)

LaSalle vs North Penn (2010 AAAA Eastern Finals)
(A back and forth battle between Public and Private to see who was the beast of the east.. A game that will be remembered for years and years to come)

LaSalle vs North Allegheny (2010 AAAA Finals)
(It was great to see LaSalle get completely shut down by a team that just played smashmouth football)

We have all been lucky enough to be apart of some great high school football games in the past few years.

  35. Buddy says:

    @ Pittston:

    nah

  37. paul from philly says:

I have to agree with Buddy on this one. Last year’s Eastern Final between La Salle and North Penn. It was a slug fest right from the opening bell. Back and forth. “The game’s got to be over now! Oh wait. No it’s not.” I really believe La Salle lost the Championship game because….. they won the Championship game against NP. Sorta like the Eagles win over Dallas in 1980. Then they lost the Super Bowl to the Raiders.

  38. SteveM says:

Berwick vs. St. Ignatius out of Cleveland. Not sure what year…early 90’s. Both were ranked in the top 5 in the USA Todaay poll with St. Ignatius at #1. It was the first game of the year. a bowl game atmosphere , televised by ESPN.St, Ignatius had the #1 H.S. quarterback in the country. Berwick beat them in the last minute or so of the game. What a game overall !

  39. MC '81 says:

    MC vs Berwick ’94
Two 13-0 teams, both loaded with talent. It was like watching two heavyweight boxers stand in the middle of the ring and just beat on each other. It was a back and forth game that ended with MC throwing an interception in the back of teh end zone with 38 seconds left in the game. To this day I will never understand that call…with 3 bruising running backs, one of them being Dan Kreider, and they had been moving the ball on the ground, why not put it into the hands of the one who got you to the goal line.
It was also the largest crowd I have ever seen at Hershey Park Stadium for a football game EVER!

I also enjoyed the ’89 MC vs Berwick game. When upstart MC took on vaunted Berwick and shocked them by going to the locker room at half time with a 10-0 lead. Berwick made the adjustments it needed to make and wore down the Barons to win 14-10. And thus began a rivalry in the playoffs that would produce a couple of classic games. (’95 was also a pretty good game between these two AAA powers

CONTINUATION of #12 — With about a minute left in the game they drive down, throw another TD with another 2-point conversion 16-16. Then in overtime they get the ball first and temporarily take the lead with a FG 19-16. Gilman comes back with a run around end to win 22-19. My disappointment in the loss was mitigated by my admiration of the great game. Believe Gilman ended that year ranked #12 by the USA Today.

  42. Buddy says:

Even though it didn’t go overtime, last years LaSalle/North Penn Eastern Final ( 38-35 ), was , by many publications, the best Eastern Final ever.

I would agree too with the 90 Becahi v Berwick game and the 94 Berwick v MC game so here’s a quick hitter of best PA games I have seen. I also have copies of these games if anyone didn’t see them the first time around.

  46. Mark says:

Small School making history. In 2006 a small eastern PA school, Lower Moreland upset a division one heavily recruited Pennington Prep school from New Jersey. A game which took place in Huntingdon Valley, Pa, right outside Philadelpha, will go down in the history books for district 1small schools forever. Under the Friday night lights. The Lions of Lower Moreland took the field knowing that everything they worked for all season came down to that very game. A win and it would be the schools first playoff in over a decade. The task was to stop the high powered offensive of Pennington who came into the game 7-1 averaging 300+ yards per game. Led by Dominic Hearld(university of Maryland) Pennington seemed unstoppable rolling over teams in the prior weeks. With an offensive line that showcased 3 division one recruits, a 6’5 D-1 wide receiver, and a runningback that already ran for 1,000 yards that season, it turned it a “will-power” game for the Lions. The game started with pennington marching down the field to a Td, but the Lions answered back with a TD of their own. Pennington would again have no problem scoring making it 13-6, Lions 6’5 tight end Gary Mitchell would make a miraculous catch in the back of the endzone, to tie the game at 13 going into the fourth. After a fumble in Pennington territory the Lions were last than 10 yards from the lead but an 103 yard Td inception an a 2 point conversation with 6 minutes left seemed to kill the Lions. But a 88 yard 9 play drive that resulted in a TD gave the lions life. With the time under 35 seconds the Lions needed the 2 point conversation. Coach Mark Mayson called a beautiful boot leg to a wide open Mitchell to tie the game a force OT. Pennington started with the ball and 3 plays later scored a TD, they would try for 2 but were stuffed by DT Shane Barrett. Lions next drive was lead by acouple of big runs by Phil Terrenzio and the Lions were a field goal away from the win. But, the extra point was blocked. Another overtime! Lions started on offensive after the first play got the Lions on Pennington’s 5 yard line Pennington showed strong defensive by stopping the Lions 3 times at the goal line. But an extra push by Pat McGarry gave the Lions the lead. Lower Moreland would hit the Extra point. Everything would be on the defenses shoulders now to stopped Pennington’s high powered offense. The first play Pennington went for the endzone resulting in an incompletion, next play the red raiders ran the ball right up the gut for a 18 yard run. First and goal at LM’s 7. Pennington ran the ball twice after that putting the ball at LM’s 2. The raiders tried a QB sneak but they were stuffed at the goal line. 4th and goal at the 1. With the crowd around the sidelines waiting to rush the field, the moment was set. Pennington called a QB sneak, only to be stuffed right away, the crowd rushed the field and the Lions would advance to their first state playoff appearance in over a decade.

  47. MC says:

Manheim Central VS Pine Richland in 2003 for the AAA State title. MC won 39-38 in double OT on a blocked extra point attempt in a raging snowstorm…

  48. beca4ever says:

1990 Eastern Finals: Beca vs Berwick (7-3). With both teams playing stingy defense while stars like Ron Powlus and Eric Marsh were held in check, Berwick held on to a 3-0 lead till late in the 4th. Beca’s star kicker had the chance to tie it up but missed. With time running out in the 4th, Beca’s Spike Johnson hit John Weis on a long bomb where Weis fell into the endzone for the winning score. Beca went on to route Seton-Lasalle in the finals.

  49. Andre says:

hazleton vs abingtion heights 2006 ist round of playoffs…score was tied 0-0 at the end of 1. then nate eachus scored in the 2nd to make it 7-0…the with 8 min left abingtion scored to tie the game up….the with 49 sec….a diving catch by pascquerelli..for abington to score and win 14-7…unfortunately oi was the defensive end for hazleton

  50. Sean says:

The 2010 4A eastern final between north penn and lasalle should be in the discussion. I never saw anything like that game, with about 7 4th down convversions and multiple lead changes

  51. HCO says:

Bloomsburg/Danville from 2007…the lead changed twice in the last minute of the game and Bloomsburg won 31-27 on a 50 yard bomb with about 40 seconds left, just 2 plays after Danville took the lead. A matchup of probably the 2 best offenses in the area that year.

  52. Brian says:

October 1, 2010 Pennridge at Souderton. This game is a huge rivalry game that goes way back. Souderton is down 7 – 3 with about 5 minutes to go. Pennridge punts and pins Souderton on their own 2 yard line. Souderton then puts together a 17 play , 92 yard drive and scores the winning td with 2 seconds on the clock. This game is one of the hardest hitting games that I can honestly say that I have ever scene!

  53. Douglas Stott says:

September 2005 St. Joe’s Prep vs. Gilman. Just a great high school football game. What high school ball is all about. Prep came in nationally ranked and 2-0. They beat previously nationally ranked Neshaminy and St. Ignatius of Cleveland. Believe Gilmam was 1-0 coming in. The game was at Plymouth Whitemarsh HS. Gilmam was up by a TD and a FG. Was looking bleak there. Then Gilmam seemingly puts the nail in the coffin when their FB breaks a long one up the middle to go up 16-0 in the 4th quarter. Prep then starts throwing and driving. Get a TD with 2 point conversion, 16-8.

  54. Joe says:

1998 – Allentown Central Catholic 18 vs Mount Carmel 15. The most physical high school game I’ve seen. In the 90’s these two programs, along with CB West, Berwick, Southern Columbia were the class of the state. ACC won this game at The Silver Bowl (MT Carmel) before a full house and handed MCA their only loss of the season. Both teams went on to win the state title in 1998 in their respective classifications. A rare meeting of state champions.

1989 Montoursville VS Hickory AA State Final @ Middle Town. Ice covered field, huge crowd, temp 13degs. Hickory had a stud speedster at the HB by the name of Andre Coleman(he went on to be a star returner in the NFL). The Game came down to a last second interception thrown by Montoursvilles allstate QB Mark Mussina in the corner of the endzone as time expired, and Montoursvilles Cinderella season was over 30 – 22
There where 4 lead changes during the juggernaught.

Parkland vs. Bethlehem Catholic 2002 1st meeting. Beca taking an early lead. Parkland and Austin Scott coming back to tie the game. Parkland taking the first possession in over time and Scott basically walking into the endzone followed by Beca going for 2 and getting it. That game really set the stage for the re match later that season.

In my book, the recent 2010 3A state title game between Bishop McDevitt and Allentown Central Catholic. That was a nailbiter of a battle, with ties and lead changes that was decided by 1pt. in regulation. McDevitt took ACC to the limit and it took a trick play and a tremendous defensive stand by the Vikings to hold on to the win!

Im going Old School! Berwick vs Middletown 1988. Berwick down 12-10. Jake Kelchner throws what should be a pick on the game winning drive. Goes through the defenders hands and is caught by Lance Evina who had slipped and was on the ground. http://goo.gl/uBVCj Dawgs win 16-12 and go on to collect their first state title over Aliquipa.

The SCA/PIUS X game in 2004 I think it was. SCA won 76-47 where the game started out as teams trading score for score and looked like nobody could play defense. SCA ran for over 700yds and had a national record, which lasted for like a week. Henry Hynoski, who hopefully will be selected in this years NFL draft, ran for over 400yds and had a 96yd TD run. On that play 2 PIUS players collided with each other around the 20yd line and I think one had to be carted off the field. Even though the mercy rule went into play, SCA never had a 2 TD lead until they scored 3 TDs in a row on their way to the mercy rule. This game was played at Selinsgrove.
